voltage converter?

I am from the US

I am looking to buy a voltage coverter but I am not sure which ones would work in Switzerland.

I want to be able to change my laptop which is a Toshiba Satellite C655.
My phone chager and mp3 player both can be changed on my laptop.

Sorry if overdone topic or wrong place. ( if so point me in the right direction! )

Re: voltage converter?

Check the power ratings of the power supply of your laptop. Typically these are 110 - 220 V and you will not need a power converter.

Re: voltage converter?

You almost certainly just need a plug converter or new cable with a swiss plug - read the label on the power supply brick. If it says something like 120-240, you are golden and don't need a voltage converter. (US is 120, Europe, inc Switzerland is mostly 230) Most laptop and cell phone chargers are like this.

Right. So all you need is a Swiss to US adapter piece (or multi-format).
These you can get at something like Media Markt, or online see e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Switzerland-Gr.../dp/B0016ZM6LO.
(By the way, if anyone knows where to get these for a sensible price - sensible being 0.5 CHF rather than 10 - let me know. We have need for a couple of dozen of them. =P)

If the extra piece bothers you, pick up a power cable with a C8 connector (see https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped.../IEC_connector).

How about $0.01 including shipping, is this sensible? Ebay is full of them. And it's not one of those items that start at 1 cent and end at $10, they are actually sold and shipped for 1 cent. My guess is the sellers just buy feedback this way.

Re: voltage converter?

Years ago, I bought a nice little 2 prong one from some little shop near J&R in NYC for a few bucks. If your laptop plug doesn't have a ground pin (and my toshiba laptop doesn't) you might as well use something small and two pronged. It is super handy and small compared to grounded setups. Also it works in more countries (Germany and Switzerland at the very least). A bit like this, but even shorter and white.

That said, I actually only use it for my cell phone now because I happened upon a replacement cable - something like this. When possible I prefer to replace cables. Then you have one less thing to catch fire or otherwise fail.
