iPhone prepaid plans

Hello all!

I'm a student from Singapore coming to Lugano, Switzerland in the next month. My friends and I are bringing our iPhones over, and we want to find out what's the cheapest prepaid data/phone plan we can use with our iPhones.

Does anyone here have any recommendations? Our primary aims are:

1. Make local calls to each other (and other potential friends we might meet)
2. Make overseas calls back to our very worried parents (hurhur)
3. Surf WiFi at hotspots, because you know, we all love to Tweet and Facebook incessantly

Would appreciate any help at all, thanks!

Before you look any further, make sure your phones are unlocked. Most iPhones bought through carriers are SIM/Net-locked and will need to be unlocked before they can be used here.

Re: iPhone prepaid plans

Sorry....new to this concept. If you "unlock" your iphone is it still usable back in the US? I've been an ATT customer for 6 years. On my second iphone (4) and can't imagine not having it with me. Moving to Switzerland in July. Clueless as to what to do about it. If I keep ATT Service back in the States AND get service in Switzerland using my iPhone do I simply switch out the SIM cards between countries?

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/in...d-packages.jsp might be your best choice if you made the (understandable) mistake to buy a locked iPhone.

Should you be able to use your iPhone with a Swiss provider, 'Lebara surf' might be another option (120 MB for CHF 4.90/month):

Re: iPhone prepaid plans

you should be able to unlock your phone on line through your home provider - it will cost a bit mine cost about 70 francs to unlock, but then it is exactly that unlocked and so you should be able to use it on any network, its standard at home (australia) for phones to be locked cos it makes it a hassle to change providers so you are less likely to change

AT&T will not unlock your phone. We moved here last summer with 9 month old iPhones (3GS) and both ended up buying new 4s with Swisscom. The international plans with AT&T are really pricey, but for the first few weeks, it will hold you over until you get a new phone or jailbreak yours. Jailbreak software is available online, but in the end we decided against doing that because if you do updates on the phone software from Apple you have to re-jailbreak every time or just stop doing updates. If you google "Jailbreak iPhone 4" you'll get tons of info. Call AT&T just to be sure, but they told us they'd unlock them and then they didn't in the end - after speaking to supervisor after supervisor. Also find out what they'll charge you to break your current contract. That was another debacle!

As for the OP - Skype to call each other and home and wifi as much as possible. Viber is another good free calls app, but I think the sound quality is better with Skype. If your phone isn't locked, you could get a SIM and use prepaid 3G for everything else. Warning, though - phone plans and data rates will probably be a lot higher than you're used to!!
