Blackberry Torch?

has anyone bought the BB Torch? How is it?

I'm looking for a new work phone. I need something with a physical keyboard. Been using my private Android phone for a while now for work as well - while I have no issues with the OS, not having a keyboard sucks when you yank out 30 e-mails / SMS / IMs per day.

Have not used a BB in about a year - have they made any progress?

Re: Blackberry Torch?

I was a very loyal iphone user and just got the BB torch, mainly because of the BBM and I love it!
I always use the Qwerty? (the physical keyboard) the touch screen keyboard is useless unless you have miniscule fingers.
The apps are not as good as the iphone, but depending on what you need it might be what you are looking for.

You have already used BB, so you are definitely familiar with BB features except that there is a bigger screen and is touch screen to top it off.

I love my torch and plan to use if for a while.
Hope this helps!

thanks for the reply! I think I'll head over to Digitec and pick one up. I don't care about Apps as long as I can check the train connections on sbb.ch

the stuff I use most - work email, IM, Twitter and Facebook are all covered very well by the Torch

Re: Blackberry Torch?

My wife got it and apart of the fact that the battery dies in the middle of the day the device is amazing. OS 6 is great, device is massive and functions real good.

Re: Blackberry Torch?

I've had mine for a few months and love it - they deciding factor was the qwertz keyboard as I sms a lot and it was too fiddly on the iPhone (fat fingers). Only downside for me is the battery life which goes really quickly when you speak on the phone - you do get reasonable notice before it is absolutely dead.

Much as I like iPhones, I would not change my decision, and I have to say that I got fabulous service from the Orange store in Lowenstrasse in Zurich.

Re: Blackberry Torch?

The phone is a bit heavy and the qwertz keyboard is very small, but the user interface is excellent, very easy to use so I would say overall it is an excellent phone!

Re: Blackberry Torch?

Some of my pet gripes about the Torch are:
- You can't map the top "lock" button to actually password lock the phone. Instead it only locks the screen, and if you happen to touch the lock button again, when sliding it into your pocket, well then its unlocked.
- You can't change the way the browser appears to the "outside" world. So no luck surfing to any WAP site.

Re: Blackberry Torch?

Although I think it's quite big, some might like it. However, I wouldn't buy it, because RIM recently announced new models coming with a new OS (OS7). Worst part is, that there won't be any legacy support (i.e. "old" OS6 models can't be upgraded).

Re: Blackberry Torch?

Blackberry is the way of the past, the company and the OS will be irrelevant in 2-3 years.

If your problem is with the lack of keyboard and you already are used to Android, the logical thing to do would be to get an Android phone with a keyboard, such as the HTC Desire Z or the Motorola Pro.

Seeing as "smart phones" are depreciating a lot quicker than 2-3 years, we can cross the bridge when we get there.

From a purely hardware point of view, you would be right. But when you buy a smartphone, you also buy into an operating system and an application universe. So if you buy a Blackberry now, you have to take into account that you will have to learn (and possibly pay for) all applications you use when you change system in a very few years. And that is of course not only about 'fun' apps like social networks or games, but also the basics as mail, browser and messenger.
Thus, taking a decision based only on the hardware would be stupid.

Re: Blackberry Torch?

So there are 2 new Torches coming out (perhaps as soon as next week). Apparently with a new much faster OS, but no more slide out keyboard. Not sure how I feel about it yet

There's also a new Torch with a keyboard coming out:

http://tech.uk.msn.com/news/in-depth...ch-9810-review

that one has the same form factor as the first one, but shares the 1.2ghz processor with the other new BBs.

As for availability: very doubtful any of the new BBs will be available here before Christmas. Someone asked on the Sunrise facebook page - apparently they're only expecting to carry the new Bold for now (with an unknown arrival date). The new Torches aren't on the list.

Vodafone UK will get the 9850/60 models, so there's a chance Swisscom will get it, too in a couple of months, once they've finished the testing / branding phase.

Sometimes, Orange gets the new BBs fairly quickly, but so far, there hasn't been an announcement.

I'd probably buy the 9850/60 if it became available as early hands-on reviews are giving it good marks for the on-screen keyboard.

Re: Blackberry Torch?

Thanks Dawiz, very good find.

I totally skipped over the 9810 when looking at the new phones, was very dissapointed in the 9850/60, but there's still hope for me.

I only know that Sunrise will not be selling them. They're only selling the new Bold, sometime in late September.

Since Digitec doesn't have anything up for pre-ordering yet, Swisscom probably doesn't know what they're getting when.

I'll probably buy a 9860 from Vodafone Germany - they're definitely getting it, but don't know when yet.

So much for a product launch in August in 225 countries. I'd say, it's an August launch in 2 countries (US + UK) and a holiday-season launch in the remaining 223 countries. Of course, by then the iPhone 5 and the Nexus Prime are out and Blackberry / RIM can go camping.

that sucks :-/ I really hope they'll have them in Germany soonish.
Buying an older model doesn't make much sense right now, considering that they won't run BB OS 7

Went through 3 of them. First one worked fine for 4 months until one of the "call" button stopped working for no apparent reason. I never abuse my phones. The replacement came under warranty and had issues so I am going through the 3rd one. Otherwise they are nice and business like. Initially, I was gonna buy the iphone but my friends who were having iphones were not happy with it either.

Exactly, I planned at some point, late summer, early fall to get the old torch, everything looked good, but some complained about the OS being a bit slow and sluggish....when I heard of the new one, apparently this was solved with the new OS! So going to have to wait

BB torch is awesome as you can tweet faster and text faster too with the help of type keypad
BB should improve there applications.
I'm definitely not a tweeter (to the dissapointment of my 3 followers), but I do txt a lot. Unforutnately it looks like they're phasing out the keypad as only 1 of the 3 new torches has an actual keypad---I'm a fan and very used to it though--can't stand the touch screen i'm attempting to use right now
