I've seen the posts regarding Netflix, etc. & they are a bit outdated or didn't receive an answer. I know Germany has a Netflix type service...I saw it advertised on TV when I lived there.

Or is there any movie rental place in Basel that doesn't cost 10 CHF per movie + membership fee?

I know this isnt much help. BUT

There is a service that lets you get movies via Mail in CH. However, you pay a yearly fee and get as many dvd's as u want durign that year.

A girl I know has the service, I just wish I was paying attention to watch she said instead of looking at her junk.

I heard re1ease.net is somewhat a less badass version of the now defunct ninjavideo.net...

Try Apple TV. Perk; if your know someone in the US, you can sign on a guest and watch all recent movies for $1-4. One time cost of Apple TV box 100.-CHF

You could also look at Video on Demand from Swiss TV(a new company that just entered the market late 2010). Their difference is there is no contract to sign like Cablecom or Swisscom. You just have to buy the converter thing for a CHF 128 one time cost.

They have something like 2'000 movies (English ones in VO) end 2010 and will be adding many more in 2011.

There's Acetrax - if you have a later-gen Samsung TV, that service is already integrated in your internet@TV.
They have a semi-decent selection of movies, almost all of them dubbed + in the original language.

AppleTV isn't a real alternative here as they only have dubbed films here :-/

You can now rent movies in CH through the iTunes store. Just hook up a laptop to your TV.

again, only if you're willing to pay for and able to understand dubbed movies. iTunes Switzerland still, despite reportedly massive user protests, isn't offering any original language movies and no series whatsoever.

Ahh. Sorry, wasn't aware of that. If you happen to have a UK or US credit card then you can instead use the US/UK apple store where there is a far better selection (which is what I do). Otherwise, as stated, it is obviously rubbish.

which TV model do you have? Not all Samsung TVs have the feature.
If you have it, there should be an @ or @internet key on your remote

As for iTunes: yes, that works but sometimes Apple notice when people download US content from abroad and block the accounts
