Speaker installed in walls / ceiling

anyone done it / got em? pro's, con's do they sound ok?

I have a totally blank canvas room and was thinking of installing speakers for the surround sound system in the walls and or ceiling, apart from the depth the speaker need is there anything else I should be looking for? can anyone recommend some speakers? reason being I hate wires, really hate wires, so I want to hide as many as possible behind the walls.

I'm not some audio freak, as long as it sounds ok then its fine by me, so no 10k speakers in depth techy arguments. at the moment I have a panasonic SS system and that sounds fine to me.

You can get home theatre systems with wireless speakers.

I have a samsung system with wireless speakers and to be honest its not a perfect solution, you still have to plug the speakers into the mains, so still have wires, and there is also a lag, works fine as long as the tv is the main driver, but use other sources and there is a noticable delay.

Re: Speaker installed in walls / ceiling

With technology changing so quickly these days, spending money putting speakers in a wall is a waste of time and money. Putting pipes that you can re-thread new cables through would be better.

Our house was fully cabled when it was built, tv, network, isdn sockets in all rooms. The lounge has speaker connection points behind the sofa and channels running through the floor. When we moved in 9 years later, all the technology had changed, so we couldn't connect our speakers to the sockets but we could run our wires through the channel and change the socket.

In the basement media room we use wireless speakers - cable problem solved

Re: Speaker installed in walls / ceiling

Mine (with wires) also sometimes has a delay, so don't assume the lack of wires is the (only?) cause. It would be a shame to go to a huge amount of effort digging out the walls etc and then find the same issue with a wired setup. It varies and sometimes it get's worse if I go throught the sound options (Stereo, Dolby, etc).
Somewhere lese (maybe TV/DVD - can't remember) there is an option for introducing a delay to compensate.. so guess it's a known issue.
We run the cables in a small white PVC channel around the skirting - not ideal but better than nothing.
