I'm expecting my first visitors to Zurich shortly, and looking at getting the properly equipped for not getting lost, being able to keep in touch, etc. My company kindly gave me a blackberry (and don't seem to ask too many questions about the bill) so the plan is to donate my (old and fairly knackered) iphone to whomever is temporarily visiting.
So I cruised into a Swisscom outlet asking about pre-paid sims, (success) and walked about 10 minutes later feeling quite pleased, tarriffs looked reasonable, iphone is unlocked and I was feeling quite smug... until...
I got home and eagerly ripped open the packaging ready only to find, to my horror, that the sim cards are a totally different size! Nightmare. Is this a Swiss thing? Has anyone come across this before or know of anyone that sells the slightly differently shaped tiny piece of plastic that holds the sim in place?

Kind Regards,

you can get a chopper thingy to trim a sim. Google will help.....
Lol - it's the other way around... they gave me a posh new (small) sim and I have an old phone (which wants old school big sim)!
None the less, the video did give me an idea. I've employed a stanley knife to shape an apporpriate piece of plastic and the right size of stickey thing (cut from the surprisingly adherent luggage labels they put on the bags at the airport). This jury rigged (and unconventionally flexible) simcard is just the job - Swisscom is conquered!
Thanks for the responses.

The following 2 users would like to thank Quafadas for this useful post:
By totally different size do you mean its too big or too small?
If its too small, then you can get a sim card adapter in which you place the mini-sim which then fits into the sim-slot of older phones. Last time i was at a Swisscom shop the customer adviser said they would provide that free if needed.

Kash.
I strongly advice against using these adapters. I destroyed my first DHD with one of these, and a co-worker ripped out the SIM pins on his Nexus S with one of them. The problem is that the micro SIM tends to get separated from the adapter when pulling it out. That causes the whole construction to get stuck in the SIM slotslot

Oh. That's the first time I heard of "the other way around". Why did they give you a mini sim? strange. I'm glad you found a work around. But maybe you should call and tell them you need the bigger sim.
i'd advise to measure twice and cut once. i merrily hacked away at a sim card until it was too small and in the end i had to superglue it into an ipad to make it work!
