Laptop repair, Basel - help!

Hi EF folks,

Couldn't see this covered on recent threads....

My laptop (Sony vaio) refuses to start, something to do with windows error according to the message I get on the screen when I try to start it(and possibly also something to do with me getting irate with it and pressing buttons too quickly).

I've tried all the options offered for special start-up and don't know where to go from here.

I've noticed the place under the bridge near Theatre - anyone used them/can recommend somewhere to take the pesky laptop to for help?

Preferably english speaking, as i have enough trouble with technology without depending on my limited German!

Thanks for any suggestions (apart from 'don't get angry with your computer' ones )

Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Yes, that was one of the options on the strange start screen (along with 'Safe mode', 'Safe mode with networking' etc).

I tried them all and it just kept failling to restart and going back to that screen again

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

What happens if you take the battery out and work directly of your powerline? does it startup then in a normal way?

Last laptop i've repaired had a battery issue, would not start up just because of it.

Long shot but worth a try..

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

It's always worth getting angry with your computer. Threaten it, if necessary.

Maybe if you posted here the exact error message you're getting, some geeky no-mates type person - such as myself - might be able to diagnose the problem and recommend a fix.

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

Joey82: I'll try it. It says it's a Windows problem, there's power and everything, but worth a try! I had to shut it down in the first place by unhooking it and taking the battery out... probably a cardinal computer sin.

NotAllThere: Thanks, good plan. I shall try that when I'm home from work this evening and have the pesky thing nearby. I'm glad you condone computer anger

Thats what the laptop here had, started up and got a windows error/blue screen, the error code was pointing out that there was a power problem.

Other issue could be faulty memory (ram).. love computers, they never tell you what they have..

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

Hi OP,

May be we'll be able to help you with the error message. I also know off two places who fix computers and have employees who speak reasonable english.

The first one I can't remember their name of but I walked into their store when I had issues 2 years ago. It's near Basel SBB between the Starbucks at the SBB and the Metropol Q Hotel. I could be slightly off but if you walk along that street you'll see computers in their window.

The Second one I know is Yaani Computer Systems. Here is their address which is not far from Banhoff SBB. Türkheimerstrasse 8, 4055 Basel, Switzerland +41 61 303 33 88. They spoke English too.

Thanks,

Stig

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

Thanks everyone! So, if anyone IS bored, the error message (on a black screen when switching on) is:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem, choose Start windows normally.

Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last known good configuration
Start windows normally

Use the arrows to select… blah blah… countdown begins and it tries to start up.

I've tried each option several times, with and without battery pack now, and each time the windows symbol comes up, it thinks about it for a few seconds, a flash of blue with a message flashes up for about half a second, and it restarts all over again with the above message!

I fear there's not much i can do, so i will follow one of the kind suggestions of places to mend it.

Thanks again for the help!

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

When I had the same problem, I took the harddrive out, put it in a usb caddy, copied everything to another computer. Put the harddrive back in, and got the recovery disk, booted from that, and returned the laptop to its initial configuration. I installed a firewall, connected to the net, and installed all the windows updates. Then I got copied the relevant data from the other computer, back onto the laptop.

That's the painful method.

On another occasion, I'd been taking regular backups. I recovered the laptop using the recovery disks, then restored from backup. Took just a couple of hours and required little technical knowledge.

I live in Basel, and if you get in a jam, send me a PM. I can take a look at it for you and see if we can get the bugger going for you. Could just be a bad software driver or something....

Re: Laptop repair, Basel - help!

Just received word that the laptop is fixed! The method was similar to this one http://www.ehow.com/how_5510972_rest...vaio-disk.html - on some laptops, the recovery disks are built in.
