Orange and Roaming

I bought an Iphone last year, and took out an Orange Subscription. The salesman tried to persuade me to pay a few CHF extra per month, and in return I would get lower roaming prices when travelling.
I did NOT take the Roaming extra, as I thought it would be dumb to pay extra for the months, where I did not leave Switzerland, and I would need to call a lot when abroad, before it paid off.

Now, in the last year, I have been in UK, UAE, India, Russia, Denmark, and Italy. Only in Denmark I was able to get a connection. Everywhere else "No Service".
As I travel more now, than 1 year ago, it seriously bothers me, when I can not send an SMS, as I have promised, or be called, if there is an Emergency.
Does anybody know, if orange actively switches off roaming, if you dont take the extra option, and if they messed up by leaving Denmark active, or have they actually managed to mess up with 5 Countries ?

Doc.

Have a look at your Orange account online. Under "My Options" there is an "International Roaming" option (at least on my account). It looks like you can Subscribe and Unsubscribe to the service there.

Also, have you got roaming activated on the iPhone? [ Settings -> General -> Network -> Data Roaming].

This data roaming is purely for mobile data e.g. internet/3G through the mobile network and does not effect calls/SMS or connecting to a foreign network for those.
Don't activate this unless you need it. I think last time I used it the charge was 6 or 8CHFs per Mb transferred on Orange, unless you have a plan with better rates.

Re: Orange and Roaming

Check the other two post's suggestions first as they sound to be the likely causes of your problems. But also, when you got your iPhone did they give you a new SIM card? if you kept your number and old SIM card you may find the old one is incompatible with newer (dats) features but SMS while roaming should be okay.

Re: Orange and Roaming

I had the same problem and called them.
After a 20CHF phone call they told me that i need to have my contract for 6 months first then 'if i am a good boy' they will let me have roaming "maybe".
Otherwise i could pay a 500CHF deposit and they will give me roaming but the 500CHF would not be given back (only if i cancelled the contract and fees would apply).
I wonder if this is a rule for foreigners only?

Re: Orange and Roaming

But it seems you have had the contract for longer than 6 months so you should not have this problem

I was told the 6 month rule would apply, unless I set up a direct debit to pay my bill every month

Re: Orange and Roaming

I also just became aware of this problem.

I was told that a credit check was performed and that it was deemed that I could only enable roaming if I pay a 300CHF deposit. This restriction applies for 1 year. I asked for details of the credit check, the rep wasn't able to provide over the phone, but speculated that because I have a B permit that this was probably the reason. Oh and it's not an easy process, do a bank transfer, and then fax a confirmation of the transfer.

At the contract set up a limit was put on the amount I could spend on international calls, so I don't see why they can't simply put an equivalent limit on the amount spent on roaming.

I was able to roam automatically when I had a pre pay account with Orange.

Anyway, it is not such a big deal, I will just use my Irish Meteor sim card, they have abolished roaming charges when roaming in the EU. So it costs nothing to receive a call, and very reasonable rates for calls, texts & data.

I intend to escalate further, I need to double check, but I wasn't aware of this restriction when signing up. (But I suppose it's probably somewhere in the small print)

they do a credit check for every new contract, unless you were an Orange customer before and they already know you.
If you haven't been in the country very long, the reason why you get denied costly options is simple: you don't have a credit history here. Having no credit history is almost as bad as having bad credit.

Re: Orange and Roaming

I've had a mix around with orange over this. When my wife headed back overseas late last year I took over her contract. She previously paid the 300CHF deposit to get roaming. Now I don't have roaming (since its been in my name) and they want 300CHF again. I explained the situation and they said they have no record of the deposit.

I can't actually see on her original contract where she paid the deposit, but its completely clear that she had to have done it because I have record of her making phone calls overseas. You recon they will put roaming back on? Because im sweating that I also won't be able to get the deposit back!

Re: Orange and Roaming

Im fed up with Orange, and have meanwhile written them off as being completely incompetent, and consider just paying them the remaining 10 months connection fee, and switch to Swisscom.
Last week I got 2 copies of my Bill for March. Today, I got the same Bill again, and I paid that bill several weeks ago.

Their hotline seemed clueless about why I could not use my Phone abroad other than Denmark and Liechtenstein, and meanwhile i cant be bothered to put in more effort.

Ah well. They still have a long way to go before they beat British Telecom, which needed 6 months, before they managed to activate my Phone Line....

Re: Orange and Roaming

Don't ever give money to Orange, they will steal it.

Even when you ring every month for 6 months and they say yes they do owe you the money and they will send you a cheque... they don't and in the end you just give up and never use them again...

Why not just get a PAYG sim, much less hassle (and cheaper).

There's a few Swiss PAYG sims that have cheap calls and cheapish roaming.

because PAYG is extremely expensive with data... and OP has an iPhone which wouldn't get much use without a data plan.

Just don't try switching to Sunrise: I did this in plenty of time for the expiration of my contract with Orange.

They claim they sent me the contract and SIM - I never received it, or a yellow ticket from Post.

As I'd heard nothing from them I chased them up, and they said that as they never got a signed contract from me they didn't set up the account. They refuse to prove they sent me the contract and it's now too late to cancel the Orange contract anyway.

So thanks to a balls up by either Sunrise or the Post, and non-existent service from Sunrise afterwards, I'm stuck with Orange for another year. I can only assume Sunrise don't need any new customers.

Don't bother with Swisscom either: in February I switched from Sunrise to Swisscom, expecting better customer service. When I signed the contract and didn't get a phone on the spot, they told me that within 3 months I could still buy a phone from them for a reduced price (in accordance with my subscription). In early May, I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S II from them. I had to wait a whole month until they finally received the phone. They rang me up and told me I could pick it up. In the store, however, I was told that unfortunately, they can't give the phone to me because I had signed the contract in a different store. Needless to say: they had seen my contract when I ordered the device but didn't bother actually looking at it. When I confronted them with that, they said "well, you can't really expect us to read all the contracts, do you?".

WTF I thought - and asked them if they could send the phone to the store (in Basel) where I signed the contract originally. They said they'd do that and that it'd take around 2 weeks for the device to be transfered there. Great, I thought, another 2 weeks of waiting. After two weeks, I tried to call the shop in Basel. Swisscom, however, won't let you talk to the store employees directly and instead patches you through to the hotline. I told the hotline about the whole thing. They did a quick check, only to find out that the store had not sent the phone to Basel, as they had promised me, as that would be "impossible". The three months were now up, of course. The hotline guy told me he'd put a comment in my account so that I could still get the phone at a reduced price, even though the 3 months were up. And that he'd order yet another one to the shop in Basel. I was told it'd take 2-3 days until I could pick it up. That was 2 weeks ago. Haven't heard back from them.
As a side-note: the hotline guy told me that it's generally no problem to buy a phone in a different store from where you signed the contract. Which would make sense, as Swisscom is a nation-wide company. Later the same day, someone from Swisscom called me again and told me that the hotline guy was wrong :-)

Needless to say, I'm canceling my contract and move back to Sunrise - where I expect bad customer service but where I also pay half as much every month.
I was willing to pay the Swisscom premium for the excellent customer service they used to have but since CS is now just as bad as with any other company, it's just not worth sticking with them.
I also noticed that they had replaced all seasoned employees at our local Swisscom store with cheap(er) labor from Germany. God knows where the long-time employees now are.

Peter

Re: Orange and Roaming

I was asked to deposit CHF 1000 to activate international roaming. The reason they told me is that I have a B-permit. It did not make sense to me as my post-paid bills are directly paid by my bank here.
