Cable TV

All, I know that there are a number of threads dealing with the question of cable TVbut I have a specific question with regards to programs. For English language films and programs shown on the 2 cable networks, are they dubbed in German or sub-titled? I'm trying to figure out whether it is best to get cable or think about getting SKY.

Re: Cable TV

No, they are not dubbed and without subtitles. Besides, English language movies, soaps and sitcoms on Swiss and Austrian channels are often in "Zweiton", which means you can switch it onto English on your remote control!

Re: Cable TV

As an alternative to cable, Swisscom TV (which you get through your telephone line) is an option worth looking at.

They don't give you Sky, but you do get BBC1-4, ITV1-4, Channel 4, Film4 and Channel 5 in addition to all the local channels. They also have a vast library of films for rent (in original language plus either French or German) and pay-per-view sports. No Premier League though, and no RTE either.

The all-in phone + internet + TV package costs something like 113 CHF a month.

Which 2 cable networks do you mean?

I have Cablecom Digital + English package.
Not only do get an abundance of UK channels but many others that can be viewed with English language. With the digital box you can set default language to English, so anything that may be available or originally made in English will have original soundtrack ("normally").

With Cablecom standard (not digital box), as stated above, you can, again, "normally" switch to original language (English), using the stereo/mono button on the remote, on all Swiss language channels, plus a few others; but not always, as this option means that true stereo reproduction is lost - and sometimes for certain programmes/films this is required [after all many Swiss have paid for their home entertainment systems and expect full stereo surround sound]

I would imagine that, if in an appartment building, cable TV is already present.

Re: Cable TV

Sky's monthly charges is very expensive. Unless you want to watch specific live sports or really really want to watch the latest shows a few months ahead of the local broadcast, I would not bother.

There is plenty of English language shows on the UK channels and the Swiss channels, all provided via cable.

Re: Cable TV

You'll only get bbc world and bbc prime as well as cnn over normal cable tv. Got swisscom tv for that reason a while ago, through which you get itv, bbc 1 to 4, film4 etc.
although our digi box plays up big style now and again, it is replaced for free by swisscom. their helpline is ok and they do try to solve the problem. however, i was getting annoyed about having to mess around and looked arond for something else, only to find out the cablecom got a horrendous reputation regarding their support. those report sounded extremely bad, and i also heard that the only reason the company is still running is because of an apparent monopoly at the time when they were installing the cables. it's only hear say, i know....

Re: Cable TV

If you look at the TV listings a lot of the programmes are in two languages,

Your TV should have the option to be Bi canal where you can switch between languages usually for films and US series, I/II or Dual A/B.

Check that you can get the Swisscom TV on their website as I could not, even though I have internet/phone with them... You put your address in and it tells you what is available in your area.
