Re: iPad - ? about bringing to CH from USA

Regarding the need to have a US credit card to access US iTunes content. You don't need to have a US credit card or address if you can buy US iTunes cards. I have both a US and UK iTunes account and just pick up a US$25 or US$50 card when I am in the US. Never had a problem, you just have to log into a different store when you want to use the US account. In theory you should be able to do this for whichever country you want access for e.g. Japan or Australia or Kazakhstan.

May I resurrect this ? I am thinking of IPAD2 3g 32Gb today on Apple CH 809CHF and on Apple US 729USD i.e 623CHF...

worth asking the question if US IPAD 3G will come unlocked and can be then hooked up over Swisscom in der SChweiz ?

thank you for authoritative feedback and regards

Re: iPad - ? about bringing to CH from USA

why not buy the 16GB and get the SD card adaptor which will allow you to plug in a 16GB card for much less

also IMO 3G is not worth the hassle, it sooooo slow. if its not on wifi dont bother.

As far as getting something unlocked by AT&T...it will never happen.

My iphone from AT&T was unlocked with ease.

With that side, it'll depend on the firmware + version...some can take 12-24 months before they're unlocked. My Swisscom one's still locked

Did AT&T unlock it or did you do it yourself?

Because the whole point of the iPad (Apple products in general) is convenience, not thriftiness. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but most Apple buyers I know would rather drop a couple hundred extra than carry around multiple gadgets or such.

It's definitely slower than wireless, but still very convenient if you're on a long train ride to Geneva or Ticino. It's plenty fast enough to work on, do email, and a bit of web surfing.

If you've got a US iPad with 3G then all you have to do is buy a new prepay SIM. I bought mine from Orange for 5CHF, but you can get it from any company.

However, the guy at MobileZone refused to sell me one. Apparently he was under the impression that AT&T gets miffed if you replace their SIM.

Re: iPad - ? about bringing to CH from USA

I'm using a sunrise sim card, bought it three months ago for ten francs or something, still going. I've not topped it up yet. It's definitely pay and go. The guy in the shop had a punch to cut the microsim out from a normal one.

So does anyone here have an iPad 2 that they've purchased in the US, can confirm that it came sim unlocked, and they've been able to use it here with a non-AT&T sim card? I still don't see anyone saying that. I see plenty saying they believe it's possible, and others saying that it was possible with the iPad 1, but that's it?

Thanks,
Dan

If you want to be naughty you can pay for a VPN service that fakes your location as being in the US. Then you can watch the vids on the network websites and rent from Netflix too.

Mine wasn't an iPad2. Is there something different between iPad1 and iPad2 that makes it trickier to change the SIM?

Re: iPad - ? about bringing to CH from USA

I've switched the card from the AT&T version several times without any problem. I've also used it with a UK and Polish SIM with no trouble and they were pretty cheap. One thing I have heard is that you should use it for the first time in the US so it "registers". I did this without knowing that fact, so I can't attest to it. But it'll only cost you one month - $14.99 - and you can reactivate any time you visit the US.

Re: iPad - ? about bringing to CH from USA

iPads aren't locked to a network. You'll be able to use it here no problem, just get a sim card when you get here. Also, you'll be able to use a standard stereo jack cable from here instead of plugging the US plug into an adapter... That's what I've been doing with apple products for years :-)
