Re: BBC 1 type radio station

Definitely not the same as Radio1, but seems the best of a bad bunch: http://www.energy.ch/
The site mentions Zurich and Bern, not sure if is countrywide, or if you'll get it in Geneva.

I usually stick to R1 on bbc site/iPlayer/Phone/cablebox!

Well I paid about 400 Chf but at a local shop so I am sure I could have sourced it much cheaper if I had searched on the web/gone to the larger electrical stores. I bought an Evoke - they have loads of models .. so you can go a lot more expensive, and a little bit cheaper too.

I log into the home wifi network which is WPA protected (is that the right way of describing a password secured internet connection?) so I did need to (obviously) put in the key etc. But I seem to recall it was picking up a number of wireless networks around our house, although they are all WPA protected like ours, so do not know how easy it would be to connect to a non protected network. But essentially it doesn't seem to work any differently than a computer.

It was a bit cumbersome searching through the world's radio stations to register my favourites, but it is much easier if you do it via their internet site - you click down long lists on the internet and as if by magic (well to my techonologically challenged brain anyway) your favourites appear on your radio screen.

Mine is a compact version that runs off mains and rechargeable battery, meaning I can listen to the Today programme in the bathroom and the Archers whilst weeding my flower beds. Not listened to Radio 1 much mind ...

Re: BBC 1 type radio station

The internet makes things very easy.

Easiest is to just go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ choose whichever radio station you want, click on listen live and away you go listening on your pc to any of the BBC stations - you'll very occasionally get a blackout when the broadcast is copyright restrictec to UK only.

I missed Radio 4 so much that I started hunting for an internet radio like you. I found them a bit overpriced and I read reviews that they are not easy to tune or to configure.

I opted instead for a Logitech wireless speaker (Z515) for 100 CHF. You get a small USB stick for your computer which takes your PC audio output and sends it to the speaker. You go to iplayer et voilà: BBC Radio anywhere in the house! One minor point is that I have to boot up my computer, but since I have to turn on my wireless as well, I do both at the same time. I created a special account that automatically starts up firefox tuned to Radio 4 so I don't have to do anything but login.

Yes I looked at the option too and thought it was very good .. but I do not want to have to rely on having my computer running all the time .. and I suppose I just wanted a radio that felt like my old battered transistor that used to follow me around the house (and into the garden) in the UK. I am very non-technical but managed to "tune" my radio no problem .. and without the instructions which had been left out of the box. Which reminds me, must get round to reading the instructions one day.
