Question on phone usage during phone number porting period.

I did a search but search terms I used didn't give me many hits so apologies if this has been asked/answered before.

I signed a contract with orange yesterday and it's going to take 20 days or so to transfer my old number. No problem there. I assume I can just use my old number as normal till the time Orange take "ownership" of the number?

While waiting for my number to be transferred they gave me an orange sim card (with an orange phone number written on the contract). However when putting it in the phone I get a service error and can only make emergency calls. The sim hasn't yet been activated, possibly will only happen when the number is transfered? I assume (I hate assuming though) that my billing date will only start the day my number is transferred and not the day I signed my contract. Be a bit pointless to have a phone which I can't use yet still being billed for it*.
I do plan to ring Orange later today if I get a chance (account details at home) but thought I'd ask here as well incase anyone has any insight. Thanks

*I'm awaiting the unlock code from Orange for my phone so I can use it with my swisscom sim in the meantime. Took some convincing when I rang the customer service agent that it was possible but after speaking to his supervisor he got the go ahead. Only problem now is because it's a new phone (Desire HD) the code wasn't yet in their system so they have to wait for the code to be emailed to them. Argh. Beautiful new phone which I can't use except for the wifi functionality.

Re: Question on phone usage during phone number porting period.

Hi Millso,

Not sure if you have had your reply yet but my gf's experience is as follows:

Swisscom contract cancelation and number changed to new contract held with Orange took 14 days before completion (14 days after signing contract and number change request). During this period the Orange sim card would not work as you experienced (and I believe the contract did not start till the sim would work) and the old number with Swisscom / contract worked up until the 14 days later.

Hope that is clear and answers your question if you have not got your answer yet. Was fairly painless for my gf hope for you too.

I didn't get a chance to ring them today but that answers my question!

Thanks!

Hi Millso,

I am facing the same situation.

I took out a new orange subscription and asked my lebara number to be ported to it.

How long did it take for your orange sim to work? Should I contact them?

thanks.

Re: Question on phone usage during phone number porting period.

I ported my Swisscom number to a new coop sim card (both prepaid). The process took approximately 10 days. During this time, my Swisscom sim was still active and I used the opportunity to suck the account "dry". Had I wanted to, I could have inserted the coop sim and used it - albeit not with my existing Swisscom number but rather with assigned coop number.

Re: Question on phone usage during phone number porting period.

I've spoken to Swisscom and Orange and have not really had a satisfactory answer from either.

I want to leave Orange (contract expires 16 Aug) and so I have to hand my notice in 30 days before, or give Swisscom POA to do it on my behalf and port my number from Orange. All well and good so far, however Swisscom cannot tell me when is the soonest I can sign a contract with them, is it literally the 15 July, or could I sign earlier and have two contracts running?

The CS from Orange actually told me that if I cancel too early, they will charge me a CHF 600 early cancellation fee but then too late and they 'kindly' extend my contract by another year
