Swisscom Internet speed

Hi all,

We have Swisscom at home, nothing to complain. For months I thought my computer wasn't enough fast and it was the reason when I try to skype with my family it cuts constantly or I can't use the webcam and the microphone in the same time without having the connection bugging and see just pictures instead of a video.

I got a new laptop, we have a home computer connected also on our TV and none of them give us a better chat quality on skype and the alike.

So I came to the conclusion that swisscom internet connection is too slow to support it. Let's face it, 4 computers got the same results, so it can't be that.

When we moved to Baselland we hade the internet provider from the area, it was much faster but we switched because of lack of choice of tv channels.

How is your internet connection with Swisscom? Is it all around Switzerland like that? Can you have a good connection when Skyping?

Nil

Hi Nil, we are in Geneva and Mrs Git skypes regularly with her parents at weekends and it works fine. We used to have a dedicated connection at work, but got rid of it as the Swisscom was fast enough for us and much cheaper than paying per data unit. We also have the bluewin telly deal at work and that works fine too. I am not a techie, but I know that not all local exchanges are digital aorund here and that can affect speeds.

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I've been checking our speed on www.speedtest.ch recently and I'm getting less than half the advertised 20Mbps, even at off-peak . I know some of the bandwidth is dedicated to Swisscom TV, but surely not more than half?

when you do that, the only way to get an accurate reading is to connect your PC directly to the cable modem using a wired connection.

The router, other connected PCs, and the wi-fi will all cause you to get less than satisfactory results.

It was wired and none of my other PC s were booted up. On the wireless PC, it was even worse, but I expected that.

it depends on your maximum capacity of your vdsl link. this one depends on the distance to the dslam (distribution box in your neighbourhood) and the quality of the link. based on noise and other factors your modem and the dslam will sync and fix a maximum up/downlink speed for your line. this can be well above 20mbit, but can be under 20mbit aswell. so if your close to the dslam, you can have a sync of 35 mbit. in this case, you can watch a hd-stream with swisscom tv and still having 20mbit download speed. but if you have a 15mbit sync, watching a hd stream will take away between 8-12mbit, so you only have a few mbits left for internet usage.
you can check your sync when connecting in your browser to the homepage of the router. normally, this is http://192.168.1.1

in any case, even 10mbit should be more than sufficent for skyping with your friends and family. a voiceconversation uses around 60-100 kbit (0.06-0.1 mbit) in both directions, a video stream uses not more (at least i havnt seen skype using more than that) than 1mbit.

as speedtest.ch is a bit limited, can you try http://www.cnlab.ch/speedtest/ ?

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I Skype/VOIP with Swisscom all the time with no problem. Check your home router settings and other things. COuld be bad wiring in your building too.

What's your latency? Ping Skype and see what the RTT time is (see the bottom of the page here for more info on testing VOIP connections)

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I have been with SWISSCOM/bluewin since 2000 here in Geneva with the 49chf/mo abo. With 24/7 chatting/voiping/streaming a/v has never been a problem even with my wifi connection. It must be your cabling. Are you using a swisscom router? swisscom customer service is very service oriented nowadays.

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

Yeah it's always the distance from the DSLAM (local exchange) that is the killer for DSL speed - as mentioned b4 on here. Also the quality of your wiring in the building.

I used to have a unbundled 49CHF/month 5MB speed from Swisscom + line rental and Swisscom TV (about 95CHF/month). But for 99CHF/month pretty much the same price upgraded to the lowest Casa package and got 10MB!

It'ss worth it as you don't need to extend your contract if you've already been connected a year and you get free offpeak calls to Swisscom mobiles and landlines. Oh and of course double internet speed.

For the record, my 10MB/s connection is fast enough for me. Skype, video, streaming etc all work fine.

I've had no problem with Swisscom while skyping and with video. This is even with a 2MEG connection back home in Scotland.

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I can even use Skype on my mobile through the data connection. Not sure what speed this is (~1.8MB/s) but it still works, most of the time.

Swisscom connection speed is appalling for us at the moment. Even the TV keeps dropping out.

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I'm trying to upload music to SoundCloud.com, (which is in Berlin), and a short 10sec test track works fine, but with a full track I'm having trouble. I've a Swisscom DSL connection which seems to drop out every now and then causing uploading problems to that site and am wondering if it's Swisscom or something to do with SoundCloud servers, was hoping someone here might know, cheers

Re: Swisscom Internet speed

I noticed a huge difference between a pay and non-paid skype connection, make of that what you will.

Paid - Never an Issue
Unpaid - Constant drop outs

Hmm, I would say some traffic prioritisations going on.

Internet speed is rarely anything to do with how new/fast/shiny the computer is. Common misconception. Yes if you clog it up with junk it will have an affect, but in 20 years of working/dealing with IT I've seen maybe x3 occasions of where the PC is at fault. Usually virus related.

Saying this I have seen poor DNS setups on the ISP end this can cause internet dropouts.
