Yeah, the upstream is one of the best things. Download-wise it depends on where you leech from. Rapidshare is quite quick (with the servers being in Switzerland) but the difference between 50 mbit/s and 100 mbit/s is so minimal for most applications, it's hardly worth the extra 20 fr. per month - at least not to me.

Re: upc cablecom just launched free calls to USA, UK, Australia, ....

Switzernet for around CHF 9.- a months gives me lots of free landline calls around Europe and the USA AND free calls to mobiles the USA. It's not perfect, sometimes I have to call in twice before it actually rings at our home VOIP line. And I have to check the call records, they have occasionally charged me more than they promised. Reminds me of the big US phone companies cheats when I started out over there years back. Then there is always Google talk, was still free last time I checked.

I've actually hit the hard-drive write speed cap (not hard though with those crappy machines ) before in a university in Ireland so yeah 100mbit is usually faster than what your computer can actually use. In all honesty I've got 10mbit cablecom here at the moment and it more than satisfies my needs. I currently (till friday) live alone though and if I lived with a few other heavy users then I'd be wanting a bit more. I'd never see myself using anywhere close to 100mbit, even 50mb i'd consider overkill.

Hmm, looks tempting.

Is the HD recorder really as unreliable as it sounds from various threads on here?

Unfortunately, YES.

The CISCO Gen 2 , is far more reliable. Faster menus , less lag , better signal quality output/reception etc.

We just had ours swapped out old, for new. I have no complaints with the new one, except, as for the old one, the NIC and USB ports are disabled.

Hey, if Cablecom is watching English Forum, is this where we can complain about the recorder/receiver always being a few minutes off in comparison with the official screening times?
....and their crap customer service?

Your Hard disk speed is

+-6Gb/s or 3Gb/s second on the Bus,

300MB/s internally, or fastest write at 70-120MB/s on the platter for an internal drive on SATA
Even an external USB drive will cope all day long with 40MB/s

100Mb broadband will not hit the limit of any modern drive...

(P2P aside, as bittorrent pre-allocates files on download and thrashes the hard drive for a few seconds when the torrent first starts pre-allocating the full file size on the hard drive - this is unavoidable and is claimed to be a 'feature'). I have 100Mb Cablecom and get 12MB/s on P2P downloads. My single hard drive can put through 120MB/s. Cablecom flat out barely uses 30% of the drives controller and write capacity. If you have 30-50 active downloads, on an old PATA/IDE drive, that does not support NCQ , then yes, you might have a problem. )

I signed up for it yesterday. It costs the same as our old 3 for 2 deal, but now we get 100mb instead of 50 and the free international calls.

I max out the servers on my usenet connection, so it will be interesting to see if I can still do it with 100mb. It's already insanely quick, but more for the same price is hard to turn down.

Is the CISCO Gen 2 the one they're showing on this page? Their "Technical Details" on that page don't actually go as far as saying the box model

As far as I can tell, they are identical in appearance, just chip and BIOS upgrades inside.

Re: upc cablecom just launched free calls to USA, UK, Australia, ....

I bet this would hit the harddisk limit.

"A 75-year-old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been given a scorching 40 Gbps internet connection — the fastest residential connection anywhere in the world. Sigbritt Löthberg is the mother of Swedish internet guru Peter Löthberg, who is using his mother to prove that fiber networks can deliver a cost-effective, ultra-fast connection. Sigbritt, who has never owned a computer before, can now watch 1,500 HDTV channels simultaneously or download a whole high definition DVD in two seconds. Apparently 'the hardest part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt's PC.'"

" According to the head of the ultra-fast fiber connection project, Sigbritt mostly used the gear 'to dry her laundry.'"

The Engineer said they had just started arriving in Feb, so no, if you have had it more than a month, I would doubt you have the new one.

I am sure there are ways to get a replacement though

Re: upc cablecom just launched free calls to USA, UK, Australia, ....

My buggy year old Cisco HD media recorder is in terminal decline. When you put it in stby after 5 mins the clock goes off and that nadgers any timed recordings... maybe this new deal is on at the right time. Just don't know if my nerves would stand switch of cablecom products as they are just crappy at it and the wheels always fall off... The 1st time we switched from media box to media recorder they sent 5 boxes, but when we went to HD they only sent 2... maybe that's a good sign

Re: upc cablecom just launched free calls to USA, UK, Australia, ....

I've decided against it in the end as well. I've done one new set up and three subscription changes with cablecom in the last five years, and there has been a problem every time, including one where I was without a landline phone for two months. For another one it was only thanks to a kindly EF member intervening that the thing got solved at all.

The offer looks tempting, but I've decided I just can't be bothered to go through all the hassle again.

Absolutely. The old menu system, even just typing in channel numbers was very laggy. The picture / signal is better and menus are faster/respond quicker.
