Re: Mobile Network: Swisscon or Orange?

My two cents...

Before: Orange - little or no network coverage outside of major areas (cities) / poor (and if, slow) 3G coverage / horrible customer support
Now: Swisscom - excellent network coverage / good 3G coverage

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

Judging by all latest replies Orange service and coverage not too great.
I was attracted by there unlimited package (calls/text: 3000 mins/sms to swiss and international number and data 1gb) does anyone know if swisscom have any comparable offer (there website is not that clear about there price plans).

thanks
O.

actually, I think they're pretty clear :-) No, Swisscom doesn't have anything comparable. They cost about 50-100% more than Orange and Sunrise.
Their coverage (at least compared to Orange) really is that much better, though.

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

So to clarify:
Orange: Crap network, Bad customer service but sort of Good deal
Swisscom: Good network, Good customer service but way too expensive
Sunrise: What about them?

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

I'd say, do not even consider Sunrise. If you call the Orange network as "crap" I don't know what you can say for Sunrise?))
My evaluation for Sunrise is:
Worst network in CH, worst customer service and never worth using.

but with Swisscom or Orange:
If you are coming here to work for an international company, your company might have a deal with one of these providers for better rates. By this way, you can have a dedicated customer service representative (whom you can call when you have issues), and much better prices than the market.

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

iirc swisscom has the best overall coverage for voice and data

sunrise has the best actual network in terms of data, faster and underused but out in the sticks its not so good

orange wanted to buy sunrise for a reason! oranges network is years behind and they have just announced they are spending 700m chf to bring it upto scratch

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

Hi,

I am using Orange for a while, and I am perfectly happy with it!

The browsing speed is good, calls are good, no coverage issues whatsoever. I am not commuting much in the mountains/villages, so experiences may differ greatly.

3 preferred numbers by Orange are excellent deal for me - since I am calling mostly 3 numbers, those are free of charge (unlimited).

Data roaming in Orange is cheaper than corresponding data roaming in Swisscom. Much cheaper.

Customer service in Orange has been very good so far. Only two issues, resolved quickly.

Cheers!

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

I will be staying in Zurich mainly and will be working in Dübendorf not planning to go out in the mountains or outside big citys so does that mean Orange will be a reasonable choice due to the cost of Swisscom?

Also Orange allows international calls with there unlimited package which is why i was looking to sign up with them but just checked Sunrise and they too allow that but one of the replies is saying Sunrise is not really good so am really .

With Orange as well.

I am happy with the reception and 3G.

I get the feeling that the network is improving. I understand that they are investing CHF 700 million in 2010-15 in the network and build-out for 4G. Link: http://www.cellular-news.com/story/43947.php

swisscom have the best overall network, orange have the worst, sunrise is inbetween (but has the best data network), sunrise's customer service hasn't been the best and cause a lot of complaints, make of that what you will.

personally I've never had a problem with sunrise or orange, my sunrise phone always has coverage and data, in the mountains data on sunrise is pretty slow. Whereas with orange we don't get voice or data in our place in glarus, and only get patchy voice at our place in otelfingen

if it where a choice between orange and sunrise then imho go for sunrise.

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

Hi All

After carefully thinking about all the replies on this thread and taken into consideration the packages all three providers offer I think that I will give Orange a go initially on prepaid and see how it goes.

Thanks.
O.

Never had problem with Orange in the city (data or voice), althoght lately I've noticed a drop in data quality - I believe Orange might've attracted too many new customers with their nre 120.- "all in" offer which slowed down the data network.

In the mountains (at least at most ski resorts), I've not had problem with voice with Orange. Data, however, is at best 2G.

The international calls allowed on Orange also includes mobile number! So that's an added benefit if you want to call UK mobiles. They are otherwise quite expensive.

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

Another flexible option on Orange is the

- Optimization - 5 CHF a month the best tariff calculated automatically every month price based on your actual mobile phone usage

I just took up this option ontop of my usual tariff
65CHF
90mins
1gb data
unlimited sms

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

I've had Orange on the iPhone tariff for about eighteen months, and the coverage for 3G is pretty dreadful outside Zurich, and total coverage is also bad.

On my Rapperswil-Zurich train journey I get 3G maybe 10% of the time, and any signal at all < 75%. As previously said, lack of EDGE means that you can forget decent browsing anywhere outside the 3G coverage.

There are even places in Rapperswil where it doesn't work at all outside, not exactly the back-of-beyond, and forget it inside a building.

I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has experience of Sunrise coverage in Rappi and around Lake Zurich? Swisscom prices are outrageous!

Re: Mobile Network: Swisscom or Orange?

Sorry to double post; one possibility for Sunrise seems to be:

Sunrise flat classic (30chf / month) + Sunrise surf flat (19 chf / month)

If the coverage is any good that would be 49 / month for most calls and unlimited internet, but I can't see whether Sunrise allow tethering which Orange do.

or go with Flat Classic Surf for 40 Fr. per month (if you don't get a new phone, otherwise it's 60 per month) including 1gb of data. They're also running a promo right now - if you sign a contract by the end of July, you'll get unlimited data until the end of the year.

Tethering works great on Sunrise.

The coverage is generally much better than on Orange. Their 3G network is better and they have EDGE everywhere.

Here's the coverage map: http://maps.sunrise.ch/coverage.php
