Got a Second Life?

I have heard about Second Life but don't personally know anyone who has one. Do you have one? What do you like/ dislike about it?

As someone who used to dabble in VRML on Silicon Graphics hardware when I should have been building molecular models, I thought I'd have a look at Second Life. I am not interested in the social aspect of SL.

So I tried it for a few hours late last year. I found it slow and jerky. Cumbersome inyerface [sic], worse even than Google Earth. A CPU hog. Their servers are slow.

You get to customise a 3D model of your own avatar. You can fly, run, walk, teleport. There is chat and also voice chat (I haven't tried voice chat).

There seems to be a potentially powerful system for constructing objects and animations and so on. But, like most 3D editors, it's not easy to use. And again, there is the annoying lag. There is some sort of scripting language for assigning behaviours to the things you build but I haven't tried to use it.

You can use real money to buy SL currency and buy and sell and make things in the SL world.

Your post prompted me to try again. I installed a mandatory update and reconnected. This time, slightly less jittery, but still a cumbersome interface. Better response might be due to my 10MBit connection though.
