UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

Hi!

Has anyone experienced that some applications like youtube is FREAKING slow on UPC. Otherwise I dont have any problem with my browsing speed, speedtest results show 51Mbit download and 5.4 up (I have the 50/5 package).

Its really annoying that I can not really watch an HD vid from youtube because it takes ages to load, especially between 18:00-22:00

There is a site called "Glasnost" which performs a connection test to figure out if UPC would be shaping my traffic...guess what

Almost everything is limited, except for browsing

IS there anything I could do about it? (not to mention torrents...)

Welcome to EF ?!

Yes use torrent clients that use UTP, they can't be shaped.

You tube is the internet so I'm not sure what you are getting at here.

You could use a paid proxy which gives you the full bandwidth.

Slow internet can also be poor configuration of DNS servers by the ISP.

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

"officially" im a new member, though ive been visiting this site for months but I have not registered yet...

Anyway I'm afraid that the same UPC thing everywhere...

In budapest I used have UPC internet as well, and they did the same. As they call "they have to prioritize the bandwidth"

When it comes to torrent, utorrent and forced encryption works here as well, but nothing I can do about youtube

I was soo upset last saturday. I was having a eurovision houseparty, and before the show we wanted to watch the participants on youtube. Well we couldnt...as it was soo slow, it was even faster with mobile internet...

In budapest i changed provider, but here I do not have any good options :S

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

I am on UPC Cablecom and get YT on HD without issues. Check your flash player for updates v10.3x was recently released. I also use the FPower optimiser by UPC as well as a reliable DNS resolver with Firefox v3

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

No issues here. 13MB/s uTorrent, never seen a stutter on any video...

Are you using wireless or misconfigured your router QOS ?

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

I can also confirm that UPC Cablecom does something weird traffic limiting.

With chrome + built-in flash player, I get really crappy download speed (youtube-speed -> video -> right click -> show video stats says something in the order of 20 kbps).

Using either a VPN server or a http proxy overcomes this issue, but I don't like connecting to my company's vpn server just to see a youtube video...

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

Quick update and temporary solution:

I just thought of that the moment I pressed submit:

If you use https://www.youtube.com (secure http), speed seems to be WAY much better.

Hope that helped.

Re: UPC Cablecom limiting internet speed

Living in the stone-age, my laptop still runs XP. I have for as long as I can remember always had problems with live-streamed (not downloaded) YT type videos. They run OK at the start, but after a few minutes max out my dual-core CPU at 100% - causing slowing, jumping and eventual stalling.

Apparently, there is a known XP bug that may cause this, and despite cleaning maintenance, and downloading 3rd party enhancement programs, I'm yet to rectify this.

If your OS is other than XP, then disregard the above.
