16GB USB Drive from Interdiscount only has 256MB?!?

A few weeks ago Interdiscount has a sale on 16GB Sony USB drives (for about 20CHF), so I bought 2. One I used right away and worked fine, but the second one I only opened today. ...and when I formatted it I was shocked to see it's capacity is only 256MB!! I checked it on different computers and formatted it several times, so I'm pretty sure something is physically wrong with this drive. Unfortunately, I don't have the receipt anymore I'll take it back and see what they can do, but I know without a receipt, I'm swimming upstream.

Has anyone had anything like this happen before? Did Interdiscount buy some bogus or faulty Sony USB drives? Kind of strange. I know things like this will happen if you buy from some shady ebay sellers from China or whatever, but Intersidcount is a major chain-store in Switzerland I don't really expect things like this to happen...but I guess they do...?

Re: 16GB USB Drive from Interdiscount only has 256MB?!?

Thanks, but your download link is dead. I found it anyway here:
http://www.codehacks.org/windows-pc/...sb-586797.html
...but all it did was verify that my "16GB" drive is in fact 256MB, which I pretty much know already. Didn't see anything about it showing it as a fake drive or not.

PS. The drive is this one, has anyone else bought it from Interdiscount? Is it working OK?

I have one of those (exactly the same by the look of the picture), I bought it from Interdiscount about a year ago. No problems, capacity is as advertised. Maybe you were just unlucky and got a damaged one ?

I'm guessing something went wrong when you did the formatting but.. why did you format it..?? I've always just plugged them in and they worked.

You didn't choose to use Speedboost on it did you ?

Reformat it using the command line format or even better , diskpart.

When I plugged it in the first time, it said it needed to be formatted to be used (no "Speed-boost"). You're right, USB drives are usually just plug-n-play, but I've seen some ask to be formatted on occasion. No big deal. I don't see how formatting can affect the physical size of the drive tho, no partitions were made or anything like that, it asked for the straight-forward "Quick format", same as if you right-click the drive and choose "Format". That just pretty much just wipes the drive clean, nothing else.

I'm pretty miffed at how Interdiscount sold me a 16GB Sony branded drive with 256MB capacity. If it was an ebay purchase from Hong Kong I wouldn't be writing this ....but a Sony drive from Interdiscount?? I'm stunned... and probably out 20CHF

Just take it back. It says 16GB on it; if it is a formatting error they'll sort it. if not, try and convince them you bought it there.

Do they still sell them? If they do, and you don't mind having another one, just buy one and then use that receipt to replace the damaged one.

No panic there. Swiss shops are very customer friendly when it comes to this kind of things. Upon thorough and logical explanation they will understand and even exchange it without a receipt. Had once this kind of experience with Wii console accessories and they didn't even let me show any proof unless of course you look like you robbed the mall

Re: 16GB USB Drive from Interdiscount only has 256MB?!?

Does it have U3 installed on it ? Maybe you have just formatted the boot partition and the hidden partition cannot be accessed. If so, got to the U3 site and get the software to remove U3 , or reinstall U3 again. Maybe Sony have the own proprietary encryption system on their drives ("Vault" ??).

Use diskpart, see if you can see both partitions on the drive...

Yea, Interdiscount has been especially good at returns/exchanges in my experience. Hopefully they'll do an exchange without a receipt, we'll see. At least it's only 20CHF, not a major deal.

I'm also wondering if they had a mass problem with this drive?...or if my case is isolated? (Partly the reason I posted this here, to see if anyone else had this problem)

No, the first drive I had was clean. I really don't think it's any partition issue. Every test I made on the drive is showing it as 256MB, and no errors or anything like that. Never saw anything like this, and I've had dozens of drives in my life.

Could be worse- you could only have 128mb

Not a 500Gig drive

Every test will show 256MB, because that's how big that partition really is. There may be other unused/hidden partitions on the drive.
You do not know if you have a hidden partition or not with the 16GB-256M.

Go into diskpart,

diskpart> list disk

Choose your disk (16GB or around that figure)

diskpart> select disk 'n'

diskpart>detail disk

diskpart> list part

etc

Send us the output.

Or you could just go into diskpart

select drive n (your USB drive, it will be in the description)
clean
create partition primary
select part 1
format fs=ntfs quick

I'll have to eat my hat and admit it was indeed a formatting problem! I have to stop clicking "yes" to things without paying attention to what they are saying
