Re: General discussion about Apple TV & Apple TV 2

I bought a used ATV1, jailbroke, and added a TB HD and XBMC. Works great for everything I need it for, especially in conjunction with the brilliant XBMC remote for the iPad.

I have the 1st Gen ATV which I use almost exclusively for music. the 30GB is just not big enough for any meaningful collection of films.

Haven't looked at XBMC. I assume it works on the old ATV too?

Re: General discussion about Apple TV & Apple TV 2

I am slowly going through the FAQs to figure out what XBMC does that Apple TV doesn't. Seems like it plays a lot of different file types... that I don't really have anyway...

But the important question for me is - can XBMC work directly off your NAS, and thus you don't need to have your PC running?

With Apple TV, itunes must always be running, and therefore your PC must always be on.

This is the exact reason I installed it. it takes a litttle bit of work, but yes, it can pull directly from nas (I'm using a time capsule). sometimes not the absolute best solution, but it works.

Ah, xbmc also does 1080P, though it can be choppy - while stock it can only handle 720P.

Edit: only does 1080P in the apple tv2; the 1st gen requires a hardware upgrade.

It wasnt a personal comment about you using a MKV encoder it was a observation. Stop splitting hairs.

The internet is full of MKV files usually on torrent sites/usenet, hence a pirate format.

I don't see the majority of legit film studios offering MKV format movie files for download, they are usually AVI or MP4. Also they have DRM imbedded.

Which means what I said still stands.

In the UK you are actually breaking the law doing this (rip + encode) and the T+C of the DVD purchase. CH is another matter.

Regardless MKV is the choice of pirates for the high quality encodes.
Not the point I was making, which I suspect you already knew. Not worth arguing about in any case.

Jailbreaking also allows you to add an external HD, and play files directly off of that. I've got Boxee, MLB.tv, all kinds of good stuff on it. No need to have the computer running at all.

Re: General discussion about Apple TV & Apple TV 2

Owner of an un-"jailbreak-ed" * Apple TV 2. Use the thing on an almost daily basis. It has replaced the dvd and cablecom box in the living room.

I have an US apple account for renting "new" movies (thanks Basellife )

I made mp4 copies of my DVDs using handbrake and stored the results on my old mac file server/NAS. I also download BBC iplayer programmes / 4oD etc which are also placed on same server/NAS.

All this content ,mostly apple friendly mp4/H264 (about 6TB), is then shared to the AppleTV using iTunes. I know others have issues with iTunes, but to "share" files to the Apple TV, it seems to do the job perfectly. The added bonus that I then have copies that are also perfectly viewable on the wife's phone.

For mkv and other problem formats, I just use a iOS program called "Air Video" to stream these formats via iPhone to the apple tv. A bit arse-about-face, but it works for me and a suitable fix, until I get around to convert the mkv etc to mp4.

* I had previously jailbraked the apple tv but found the xmbc and plugins for iplayer etc not so reliable and froze my system too often, so I found other ways to get the same results.

Overall very happy with my Sfr110 purchase.

Pat

Guys

I got a Apple TV 2 and I don't want to convert all my DVDs or other Video into Itunes. Is there a way to jailbroke apple TV 2 and use it as media center and stream video and music to other compatible devices? After Jailbroke is Airplay working?

Sorry for the lame questions, I am a newbie when it comes to this stuff..
Reference to link would also be helpful..

Airplay is definitely working after jailbreak, but I'm not sure if I understood the first question fully. For example are you willing to read your DVD from your computer and display it on your Tv with ATV?

How are you linked? Could be purely a connection issue, though the hardware isn't exactly stellar - rumour has it that a new one will be showing up before the end of the year.

Hi,

I have an Apple TV 2, Mac and Apple Time Capsule. My media is CDs, DVDs as well as Movies on TC or on my MAC (in AVI or MPEG format). I was wondering if there is a way to stream the content to TV without converting it into Itunes. I understand that by Jailbreaking the Apple TV it can be done?

Cheers

Re: General discussion about Apple TV & Apple TV 2

I have an ATV1 hooked up to an external HDD so my music/photo/Movies/TV is stored on the external drive not the actual ATV, as well as on the imac (so it's acting as a back up) so my times capsule is just doing system files back ups. The ATV is and it's plumbed into a Blu ray HTS for great HD viewing and 5.1 surround sound, so I'm slowly getting rid of the hard CD's/blurays/DVD's.

For any files I 'might find somewhere out there' that aren't in MP3 or AVI formats I use Toast to convert them, before adding them to itunes directly or to ATV using Filezilla. I don't have to have the computer on to view the stuff that is on ATV as it pulls it directly from the external drive, so nothing to fancy, no jailbreaking and it it all works nicely for me, but am always open to improvement ideas.... as long as they simple.

I've installed PLEX on my macbook and atv2, but atv2 only sees macbook as a server, I cannot add any other address (like my TC) to the server list.

That's one of the subjects in the main discussion. There are 2 options XBMC and PLEX. XBMC can be used without the computer in between, whereas I couldn't do this with PLEX. But PLEX is more fancy in the look than XBMC (shows video abstracts, pictures..etc..etc - downloads from itnernet) and plays MKV files. If I find a way to define my TC as a server to the PLEX, I will definitely quit using XBMC.
Here's the link for downloading PLEX for your MAC/Windows:
http://www.plexapp.com/
and here's the link for installing PLEX on ATV2:
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2010/11/...n-apple-tv-2g/
and of course how to JB it:
http://www.appletvhacks.net/2011/04/...ss-untethered/

Aye....

But what would I get over the way it runs now by using the things already mentioned above. I'm not a techy so kendergarten sprach is perfect and the channels for TV I get with Cablecom are fine for me.

I would like to be able to run the TV in the lounge and the TV in the bedroom from it though, not the Cablecom just the stored media.

The beauty of this is, once you define your Hard disk as a source to your apple tv, you won't need to think about formats again; you can just drop anything on that hard disk and apple tv will play it without restrictions.

I couldn't add my time capsule as a server to plex, do you have a guide to do it?
I don't have a guide, and I've never tried a Time Capsule, don't have one. I use UnRaid, a totally awesome RAID 4 system that runs off a USB drive. I have a 6 TB server that I just point PLEX at and it works perfectly!! I'm not using an ATV2 yet, I have a Mac Mini as my media server, but soon we'll have another TV in another room and have been looking at an ATV2 as the media client on that TV.
