in the second option they say that a router can be connected to the cable modem, provided by the company, to give wireless and ethernet connection

my question is: since on ricardo cheap adsl routers are common, can we use it "after" the cable modem to have wifi and ethernet connectivity?
or do we need a special router?

Not all adsl wireless routers can be made to set to disable the ADSL port as the WAN port and use one of the Ethernet LAN port as the substitute WAN port.

Those from Bluewin ( Motorola Netopia ) fall into this category. Exceptions are those from eg Fritz! Box. Best to get a broadband wireless router and connect the RJ45 WAN port to the LAN port of your cable modem - we've had several threads on this including:

You just need either:

1. Access point to be connected to the router
2. Router with built in Wifi options connected directly to the line.

These days, pure Access Points ( AP - no routing ) are rare and more expensive than the Wireless Broadband Router, which does AP functions as well. Routing / NAT is required to allow more than one device to simultaneously access your internet connection ( mobile phone, laptop, desktop PC etc. ).

You might find it better to put out an advert under the For Sale / Wanted section of the Market Place on here for a Broadband Wireless Router and pick up a pre-loved one for a song or for free if lucky, in addition to sound advice from members in the event you encounter issues.

Access Point = wireless access, both APs and a wireless broadband router have that.
