Skype Android

Maybe it is in the wrong section
But I thought some people would be interested to know about the new Skype for Android:

Re: Skype Android

Hi CdcDoc,

I've been testing this over the past 2 weeks, it is a hit and miss at best. One really needs a powerful Android Phone, a good bandwidth and data plan, use wifi for best results on both Voice and Video, HSDPA will give you a good voice, video is not really a good option and EDGE will give you distorted voice at best but it is not really an option for either voice or video.

Re: Skype Android

I downloaded, a couple of days ago, the "latest" version on my SGS2, which did not have video. How disappointed was I.

EDIT: I am reading comments and apparently will not work either.. *sigh*

They'll add the SGS 2 for video in the next couple of weeks. But tbh: Skype (and Facetime, which is even worse) video-calling is pretty much BS. It only really works on WiFi and even then, the quality is pretty crappy.

Google Talk is much better in that respect, but you need Android 2.3.4 or Honeycomb for that - and so far, only the Nexus S and the Tablets have this.

The SGS 2 will get 2.3.4 by the end of the month, apparently, so this should soon be a good alternative.

Some video calling...even if it's bad quality....is better than no video calling

not sure about that :-) if you only see some distorted pixels, I prefer not seeing anything at all, TBH

But that's you. I prefer to have the option. And facetime or skype video calling isn't some distorted pixels.

really depends on the connection speed. I'm finding facetime here unusable - and Skype on the iPhone is equally unusable, unless you're stationary on a 3G network with excellent reception or on a Wifi network.

Google Talk seems to be the only thing that actually works reasonably well

Facetime only works over wifi though right? I've had no problems with it.

yupp, I tried it a couple of times on public hotspots (in hotels and in Starbucks) and found the network speed wasn't fast enough for decent video. At home it works well - but there I really don't need it, as I can use my computer's webcam there.

Re: Skype Android

I wonder how well it would work wirelessly tethered to my Android using HSPA...

Re: Skype Android

Hello,
I am using Tango - free app from store, which can use both cameras on my SGS 2. Tried just on wifi with friend with another SGS 2 (yes, it's such a good phone ), and works like a charm.
And as for speed - video requires tremendous amount of bandwidth, compared to voice (compare mp3s with movies, just for an example). And of course low-latency connection. I wouldn't expect much without wifi out of it, or on a place with excellent 3G connection.
