OK, so it seems from a technical point of view, it's all go. The remaining questions for me are:
1. Convincing the wife we need one
2. Will the BiL be willing to make the purchase?
3. Will he have any problems bringing it into Barbados?

And those, my dear friends, only I have an inkling or the wherewithall to solve.
Answers:

1) Your problem bud
2) Ditto
3) Wrap in condom and swallow (the iPad that is...)

Simples

And no, those Apple peeps have no idea about serial # tracking yet; they can track you and your family via your iPhone and other 3G devices, but no tracing serial #s (yet). Maybe Mr. Slaphead can correct me as he is "in the know" on these Chinese Foxtronic gadgets.

My US purchased iPad worked as advertized out of the box BTW, no issues at all. Had it before they'd even released the iPad2 in Switzerland.

Re: US-bought iPad2 in CH'

Why would it not work? Did Apple produce a gadget that is not portable and can't be used in another country?

Anyway, I bought an iPad in the US for a friend in Singapore before it was released there. It works.

Then I bought an iPad for myself in Hong Kong last May. Works here, despite setting it up in the store in HK.

Then last week in Malaysia, I bought another one for my cousin who lives in France. 32GB wi-fi for about EUR410. Apparently more than EUR100 cheaper than in France. Switched it on in Malaysia in case of DOA and my cousin picked it up last weekend and says it's working perfectly in France.

So they all come from the same factory in Shenzen and works everywhere... at least the non-3G ones...

OK, 1st obstacle removed, BiL has said he is happy to pick one up . I have a question concerning US sales tax though; on the Apple web store, there is no sales tax added, whereas I though everything in the US was subject to sales tax? I've only been over the pond once, so don't have a bastard clue, really.

There's no sales tax in Oregon.

Otherwise, it varies from state to state.

That's encourgaing then. iPad2 16GB in the US retails for $499, that's Sfr. 405.- at the current exchange rate. Same iPad2 in CH retails for Sfr. 545.-, and my BiL in NY will be joining us in Barbados . Still not sure if he'd be willing to buy it for us yet, and have not run it past the wife as yet....
Hi PaddyG,

Mine works perfectly. Bought it in Baltimore at the Apple store. Just put a plug adapter on it for charging. Entered the password for our Swiss wifi and "Bob's your Uncle" (is that a correct use of of this Britishism?)

Re: US-bought iPad2 in CH'

This usually depends on the sales tax to where you are shipping the ipad to, for online commerce.

K, then it depends on where in New York State. Here are the rates:

Barbados...that sounds like a great trip! Have a pina colada for me.

Got the iPad back to CH and is working fine. I do have a question though, seems to take forever to charge from the mains, is this normal? Had it plugged in for a whole morning more or less and it was only at 60% or so. Any ideas?

Re: US-bought iPad2 in CH'

Got one last week from NY. Also thought the same re: the long charge time. Seems to be normal though. Took about 5 hours for a full charge from 5%.
