Best operator for pay as you go SIM?

Hi I'll be working in Basel for the next 12 months and want to get a Swiss SIM. I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy I900 and I plan to use that. I'm going to go prepaid as I won't be using it that much will be just the odd local call and text, and maybe 50 - 100 MB of data per month so with a data add on as well.

Anyone have an opinion on the best operator to go with? I was thinking Orange as Swisscom are supposedly the most expensive and I read on another thread that Sunrise may be blocking Skype and other voip stuff on their network.

Can I just walk into a shop, get a prepaid SIM and slot it into my Galaxy? At home there is no contract for prepaid, is it the same here?

TIA

Until a week ago, I would have suggested Sunrise. But as you mentioned already: they're now banning Skype and Tethering, so they're off my list.

If you'll mainly be staying in the Basel area, go for Orange. If you'll be doing a lot of exploring all over Switzerland, go with Swisscom. The latter costs a crapload more, but their coverage outside of urban areas is much better.

And yes, you can just pick up a SIM card and put it in your Samsung, as long as your phone is unlocked. No contract required, but you will need to fill in the state-mandated registration form that is required for all prepaid cards in Switzerland.

Re: Best operator for pay as you go SIM?

For calls, I use Yallo. They have really low rates for international calls, usually CHF .10 / min for Europe (or this Summer, CHF .05 / min) and CHF .25 to India. No data though.

Pay as you go (prepaid) is easy, just go to the shop, show your ID or passport (foreing is OK, you don't have to be resident to buy prepaid), pay, and that's it.

if you are looking for cheap international calls you can go for virtual operatiors like lyca, lebara....... but local calls are very high compared to orange..

Actually, yallo now has a data plan albeit a terrible one. CHF 2 for every 10 Mbs. It's awful if you're a constant surfer. I just check my emails and train schedules on the SBB app. I think I was deducted only CHF 4 in the month of July.
