LOL.

Listen and repeat: Nobody. needs. a. tablet.

It's a gimmick. And since the iPad in a decent configuration costs just as much as an MacBook Air I know what I'd go for.
i guess you could also say 'nobody needs a computer'.

or 'nobody needs electricity'.

My tablet has made my laptop redundant and my online life a whole lot easier... I think Treverus should use one for a week and see what it can do for him..

My tablet has essentially made my laptop and my smart phone redundant. the iPad 2 can do almost anything. I was even checking and modifying an excel spreadsheet in the back of a Black Cab in London on Monday.

Well, sure. But if the OP wants "the best device to read, watch movies, surf and email with a long battery life" I cannot recommend a tablet and especially not the expensive iPad:
- if you want it cheap, netbooks can do all of this and more for half the price. Since the tablet boom do they not sell well anymore and you can get great deals...
- if you are willing to spend iPad money, you can get something that is superior in every aspect to it.

The wife spent a grand on the top spec iPad one last year and while I find it some fun toy would I never buy one for myself at this price.

My iPad cost £479. I have a stack of unused netbooks in the corner of the room. Loaded with windows and shuddering processors that overheat and generally are good for nothing and rarely cost that much less than an iPad. They charge with huge cables and converters that weigh almost as much as the device and will barely run a 720p movie. Bad sound chips in case you want to listen to the audio.

but tablets are more suited to consumers. if they were invented before laptops, i'm sure most people would say that it would not be worth saving a bit of cash to get a machine which is much more complicated and hard to maintain.

Well duh. You don't need to buy one. Your wife took charge and got one.

fixed it and agree.

All I am saying is that given the current price point, I'd rather buy an Air. I will, actually

Netbooks DO NOT and CANNOT do what the ip2 does and more, they are underpowered waste of spaces that's why they don't sell. Tablets have a totally different set of uses to a notebook let alone a net book

It's amazing what they get out of the A5 processor, Atom processors can barely do HD and the whole experience is sluggish and bloatish. It's like picking up an old P4 laptop...

In all fairness an iPad doesn't run 720p either

Re: Tablet PCs - recommendations from frequent travellers

If watching movies are your thing, then the Sony S2 with a Bravia LCD screen may well be the clincher. Their styling for Tablets is knockout, as was their Vaio styling for laptops. They are a bit late to the game, but I think the end result will be worth it.

It's as good as or even better looking than the iPad. If it feels as good then it's a winner. The Xoom and others just feel cheap and plasticky.

Tablets are for watching, not writing. If you are going to write anything, steer away. Trust me, nothing can beat a real keyboard.

Be aware though, if you download movies from DVDs, the soundtrack can be very low ... make sure you have headphones that allow you to pick the soundtrack up clearly - or your ripping software allows you to increase the volume
I found this from P2P shared files.....especially when listening on airplanes, its a pain in the ass. Are there any workarounds? And are there any headphones which can boost the output?

I never bothered with the first generation of iPads, but took the iPad2 because I'm an Apple fanboy and if Steve says it's great, then it must be.

Truth is, I really like the thing and it does what it says on the box. No complaints at all, it's much easier to watch movies and send a quick e-mail than firing up a computer.

Exactly, I got the Kensington keyboard for the Ipad and it works like a charm. Haven't really used my laptop since I got my Ipad2.
