Hello fellow EFers

Am thinking about getting a tablet computer, principally to read books and watch films while travelling, secondarily internet and email (based on the assumption that internet roaming via telephone abroad is prohibitively expensive and you don't usually get service up in the sky). I always travel with a laptop, but battery life is usually poor and am wanting somethinga little more lightweight and quicker to "grab" and get up and running with.

However, this is all new to me, so would welcome any recommendations/advice about what to get. Comments about follow-up pitfalls (e.g. not being able to get English books/films easily etc.) would be welcome.

The obvious - I can hear the groans already - choice would be the ipad (2), and as I have an itunes account and iphone (not by choice I hasten to add) am vaguely familiar with the whole set up. However, I've also seen that HTC and Samsung have a smaller 7' versions running Android, however this OS is something I know nothing-nada-zilch about other than it seems to be on the other side of the fence from Apple.

I've read on-line reviews, but all these seem to say is that really I should get one of each, because they are all so-gosh-darned brilliant.

So thanks in advance forthoughts/suggestions/tips based on personal experience(s).
It doesn't sound as though you need a tablet, as you usually have your laptop with you. Wy not just get an e-book reader? Perfect for when the laptop has run out of batteries, and unlike a tablet you can use it outside in the sun.

Yes you can use the Ipad2 for writing as well, I just got this:
http://store.micgadget.com/covers-an...or-ipad-2.html for mine and I love it!!!
Doesn't that turn it into an underspecced MB Air?

I bought the girlfriend a first gen iPad and she loved it. With the second, I decided to jump on the bandwagon - the ability to use FaceTime on a decent-sized screen is the killer feature for me. But the battery life, movies, and app selection are all great too.

The small graphical touches, though, are what make it feel irreplaceable. Transitions are smooth and graceful. Switch to another OS and every graphical change feels clunky in comparison.

it does but i have a Mac pro which doesn't make travelling light easy so this is a great, cheap solution

Re: Tablet PCs - recommendations from frequent travellers

I can't say enough about the iPad. I have used some of the competitors and while the lack of flash is annoying, I find that many sites are dumping it for HTML5. The battery life is great and the iPad2 is really slim. Despite that, to me the main selling point is the extent of the apps on the app store. The problem I have with my Android tablet is that there are only a small group that are made for the screen size, so many apps don't utilize the nice large screen.

That's pretty much hit the nail on the head. The iPad is smoooooooth....graceful, elegant and refined. The others are just sticky.

Re: Tablet PCs - recommendations from frequent travellers

I'm thinking of getting an iPad as everything I have at the moment is Neanderthal (so am I come to that).
I was told that there will be an iPad 3 before the end of the year.
Is this right?
Having waited so long, a few months more isn't going to bother me too much, and I might as well get state-of-the-art.
I heard the screen was going to be easier to read, like the Kindle screen, no glare.
I heard this in London, but it could, of course, be tittle-tattle.

Not a netbook, but the same size as one:

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-dm.../dp/B004H0OA7S

I have one, and it is blindingly fast, with long battery life.

The main reasons are because switch-on7off time is slow with laptops (important for shorter flights), and if you run a movie from a DVD battery life goes down massively... Added to which it is more hassle if you are hanging around in an airport to get the thing out and set up.

What do you guys think of the Asus EEE transformer tablet ? A guy here at work has one and he cannot praise it enough.
To me it also looks like a better option than the Apple, 16 hrs or battery life, screen is well protected, no I-tunes (I only have
Ubuntu, no mac or windows), no need to convert avi files.

Re: Tablet PCs - recommendations from frequent travellers

I type 45 WPM on my iPad. If that's enough then there is no need for a physical keyboard IMO.

I do some simple typing on an iPad...I'm not going to write or edit my thesis on it

Yes. Though this still takes precious time and "can I be bovvered" effort... I get the impression that Windows likes to "punish you" for not shutting the computer down.

Looked at one, and one of the things that struck about all the "pc" tablet versions is the weight - they do seem to weigh more than the ipad.

Agree, and let's not forget how laptops get after a while...noisy and hot. This aparently isn't the case with the Ipad.

Mine does that too. But if I forget to switch it off properly, the next morning, the battery will be gone or only 3 minutes will be left for me to rush and save all my work.

iPad2 seems to go on forever in sleep mode...

and... it would mean that everytime I shut the lid it would sleep/hibernate, which is not useful in my line of work where I have to carry the laptop around with me, open the lid work, go to next meeting etc. without waiting for it to come out of sleep mode.

Can't be arsed with managing power settings so carefully, so I have mine on when lid is shut (i.e. do nothing).
