Help... looking for cheap wifi at home...

Hi

I'm a bit confused by what my options actually are, I tried Cablecom but the services are not available at my address. When I did a search for my cable provider I got www.wwz.ch and the site is only in German.

I am looking for wifi at home for a laptop and ipad (neither of which accomodate ethernet) but the Swisscom website is quoting me hundreds of CHF just even to get set up. I'd be happy to pay 50 CHF for just internet or up to 100CHF for a combined package..

Is this correct or (please tell me) I am missing something?

Thank you...

Try sending wwz en email in English.

Who currently provides your fixed line ? If it is Swisscom, you should be just able to get hold of a VDSL / wireless router , and order their basic internet package, but if they have to plumb you in from the start, you may well have to incur these costs.

Slightly over your preferred budget, but Swisscom have a combined internet + phone + TV package for 111 CHF a month. This includes wifi of course.

I think that can be reduced to about 100 a month if you take the most basic TV option (which does not allow pausing/recording and only has a very few HD channels).

Thanks.. I don't have anything right now phone-wise, the landlord said I have all connections "ready" and pointed to outlets in the wall but did not give me any more indication other than I had to activate the service with whatever provider I choose. Good idea re the email in English, will see what happens from there..

Re: Help... looking for cheap wifi at home...

I don't know the set-up in CH but when I was in London the situation was that you had to pay phone line rental to get broadband even if you never used the landline (like myself).

In the end I bought a PAYG mobile broadband SIM and a 3G router. You have less bandwidth (no problem unless you want to download movies etc) but for general internet stuff...job done!
And I saved the 15 line rental for something I never used. The 15 could then be spent on topping-up my data allowance.

How slow is c**p? Don't today's phones work at the same speed as broadband dongles (3.6 Mbps+)?
