Question: Broken mediabox - Can I use my card in another set-top-box

Hello,

I have a question for the techies out there.

I bought a set-top-box a couple of years ago from Cablecom.
I think it is a Thomson system rebadged as cablecom.

Anyway this unit has now failed but I still have the smartcard.

Can I buy a new box say a Samsung or something and use my old card in it?

Or could I buy an old cablecom box and use this?

I have seen UPC boxes for sale on Ricardo.

Basically I guess I need to know if the card is twinned with the box or if it can be used in another unit.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

John

The smart card is usually paired with the corresponding set top box. Maybe they will pair the existing card with a new receiver if you contact them.

Give it a try!

Thanks crypticro that's what I thought.

Then the only solution is to find an old working decoder and replace the broken part in mine. Sounds like too much work really.

Don't think that cablecom would let me buy a new decoder and as they are not renowned for their customer service when you have an "official" problem. I don’t think it is really worth trying

I have decide to purchase the smart combi as I currently have a video2000 connection with internet (wifi) so I guess if I get a free decoder/recorder and a wifi modem then I am only paying about 10 to 15 Chef for the extra channels on digital.

I have to say I would have preferred to go the swisscom route as they have all the English channels in Suisse romande while cablecom doesn't but it is not possible in our commune (weak signal).

By the way do cablecom customers pay a line rental on top of the monthly charge.

In Neuchâtel I will pay 79 Chf to cablecom + 23 chf to Video2000 for my connection.

Admin sorry if I have gone a bit off topic but I think my post will end here.

John

Just rent one from them. Yes, it costs more in the long run, but when the boxes go wrong you can take them back and get them exchanged.

I have found that UPC Cablecom has improved substantially lately, however when I want anything straightened out, I go directly to their service point. In your case it would be:

Video2000

Rue du Seyon 30
2000 Neuchâtel
Opening hours:
Mon: 1 pm to 6.30 pm
Tue – Fri: 9 am to 12 am / 1 pm to 6.30 pm
Sat: 9 am to 12 am / 1 pm to 5 pm
