Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

Sadly I cannot bring myself to buy one of these things. Bit of an old fashioned man, don't like walking around with too much stuff on me and all these pads definitely qualify as too much.
This therefore means I use said gadgets mostly at home. This being the case, I stick to my Macbook Pro for the time being.

I dunno, some of those more persistant gruff nuts need a sharper edge to be dislodged.

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

No way an Ipad can replace a laptop. The ipad is good for travveling and casual browsing, however i find myself reach for my iphone more often than my ipad even for that..

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

Hi there,

I like to read a newspaper with full edited content (not just scroll through a website version).

I bought an iPad because I subscribe to facsimile digital versions of English newspapers (full copy). The app 'Pressreader for iPad' ticks all the boxes for me and most of the quality dailys cost just CHF1.-- and you can download them the same day from 05:30 CH time.

I used to pay CHF5.50.-- for a pre-ordered (1 day old) hard copy at my local kiosk (even then they didn't always arrive).

You can of course use the online mother site 'Press Display' on your laptop, but after a while, and probably simply for practical reasons, you'll probably decide to go for the iPad daughter app (especially if the mrs is on e-bay anyway).

Regards and all the best.

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

Personally I have a Motorola Xoom which runs Android and I think it's great, but would agree that it's not a replacement for a laptop. One of the really cool things you can get on Android and not on IPAD is something called "swype" a new way to enter text designed for mobile phones and tablets

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

One big plus with the iPad is that it CAN'T handle flash as said before... Basically, this means faster opening of websites that have heavy flash adverts ruining my otherwise so short span of patience.

I think the iPad is a wonderful piece of kit and much easier to take with you if you're on the move a lot. Best thing is the magazine/newspaper subscription through Zinio (believe there might be other apps as well) at a fraction of the printed price.

Battery life is IMO brilliant, nothing can go wrong as you can't delete files you shouldn't delete etc. So if you don't like modding (without JB'ing) or making specific changes the iPad is the thing to have.

I actually do most of my daily computer things on my iPad these days rather than on my Macbook so go for it...

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

After over a year of scoffing at iPads, I bought a 3G one just over a month ago, initially so that I could listen to TMS (Cricket) on the move and check personal email at work, and do things whilst commuting.

Since I bought it, I think I've turned on my laptop twice. Whilst it isn't a replacement for a laptop, for the basic run-of-the-mill stuff, browsing, mail, social stuff, even a few games, I must admit they are pretty good. And the battery life is rather impressive.

Absolutely. Definitely a massive plus for surfing, mailing & co, and when you get back to the hotel room which only has some very obscure foreign language TV channels, you can stream UK or CH TV or watch your favourite pre-synched films to your heart's content - without charging (in comparison to the laptop) the battery for the third time in 12 hours.
