Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

I don't think an Ipad can replace a laptop. There are numerous websites that don't work on the Ipad. You can't really use it as a working tool for any MS Office type things. Yet it is much more fun to use so you will find that you are frustrated that it doesn't "do" more.

Having said that its fantastic for watching movies, etc. Different uses. You can also keep your laptop for now and pick up a 1st generation Ipad for pretty cheap these days, then try out both and see what you think before making an investment into either new.

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

I love my iPad, but it cannot replace a laptop/desktop. It's great for web browsing (but indeed, many websites do not display correctly, often due to iPad not being able to handle Flash), emailing, eBook reading, movies, music, and probably gaming. To do actual work on it is wishful thinking!

Depends what you use your laptop for. If, as your post suggests, it's just listening to music and surfing the web for fun (as opposed to say academic research / running your own site etc) then probably. If you're using Excel macros / working as a network admin or so on then probably not.

Obviously there are many other scenarios as well - as I say, it all depends on what you want to do.

EDIT: By the way, I'm selling a first gen 32GB Wifi iPad if you're interested

An IPad is a device to consume multi-media, if this limited functionality is all you want then it should be OK.

Are you male? Wouldn't the biggest reason be not being able to view p*rn sites with flash?

Both of those addictions can be easily supported with an iPad

Get Atomic browser for one, it plays almost all formats, including flash.
Now if only java were supported....

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

There's some discussion on this fantastic thread...

If you are really are just surfin' the web then ipad +/- bluetooth keyboard wins IMO.

There's a whole range of them, e.g.:

Interesting - well sort of - article about ipad 3... suggesting it might be released Sep 2011 - although I reckon it might be closer to Christmas.

Re: iPad to replace aging lap-top

Depends on what you want to do. I find that I can do about 90% of what I need on my iPad. With the office suite of Pages, Numbers and Keynote you can do all of your document needs. The lack of flash only hurts you every once in a while since many websites are switching to HTML 5 or have alternate sites for iPad. (The site will automatically route you). The only thing are programs that are Laptop based and have to alternative on the iPad. If you have access to a regular computer at work or something, I think you can replace your laptop with an iPad. A suggestion for typing would be to buy a blue tooth keyboard/case combination. It works well for longer typing documents that might be a bit harder using the touchscreen keyboard.

Grynch,

I know you are partial to your Osbourne and are probably stressed about upgrading thus the extreme measures (Ipad?!)

might I suggest a Compaq III- much better screen size, good for aging eyes. I find the orange monochrome much more legible than green.

Baby steps, man, baby steps. Don't shock your system.

I tried - with several tablets, not just the iPad. The tabs just aren't laptop replacements at the moment. Not only because of their limited functionality, but also because you can get an entry-level notebook for less money.

Unless the only things you'll be doing on the new device are leisurely browsing the web and listening to music (although, if you don't own a computer, how would you get the music on the tablet), I suggest you get a notebook. Browsing the web on the iPad is OK, but it doesn't support flash. In my experience, e-banking doesn't work, lots of Swiss online shops rely on Flash etc.

I don't recommend iPad as a computer replacement. It's more of a temporary entertainment piece when the laptop isn't practical (e.g. watching movies, listening to music, playing app games, Facebooking, googling, EF trolling, etc).

If you want more computery functions at a lightweight, then I would suggest a Macbook Air.
