Internet TV - Is it worth it?

I am considering buying a new LCD TV at the moment and am looking through all the various features on modern TVs. Like most technology, many 'features' advertised by manufacturer are nothing more than marketing guff.

However I am undecided whether having internet capability on a TV is a really useful feature or just a gimmik. Part of me says that I will never choose to log into Facebook in a 40" TV in the living when my laptop is sitting on the table beside it. On the other hand, the notion of streaming live TV through straight to a TV is appealing and strikes me as the direction in which TV will move in the coming years making it quite useful. I am unsure as to whether this is something I should care about or not when making my decision.

Has anyone here got Internet capability on their TVs? And if so do you use it much?

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

It's a gimmick. The SONY version I have is slow (Wi-Fi) and nearly unusable as the remote control is the "keyboard".

If you have an iPad you can connect this via an HDMI cable to your TV and that really speeds things up. Youtube is quite good watched this way...

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

I bought a Samsung with internet capability. I use the internet radio feature on it everyday. I also access youtube on it quite a bit.

I am trying to hook up the skype feature (got the samsung camera) but haven't figured out how to make the video function yet. This is kind of annoying as it was the main reason for buying the TV. I thought it would be more relaxed for the kids to talk to family back home as if they were watching TV, rather than being huddled around the computer.

You can buy a mini keyboard for it to help with the problem of having to use the remote to navigate.

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

yes, and no

yes we have it, no we never use it, we have youtube as one of the options tried it once, it uses the tv's (samsung) own customised gateway onto youtube, which is rubbish, that was enough to put me off.

we use the tv as a pc monitor as well, so for us there is just no point, only slightly handy part about it is you can update the tv's firmware at the click of a button

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

As the other posters are seeing, it's early days yet. WiFi enabled TV's are hopeless for streaming HD, you should consider a TV with an RJ45 wired port.

The interface is the problem, until the manufacturers decide to standardise on say Linux, that can use Internet enabled media players and browsers etc, the current crop will just be a mish-mash of proprietary simple screens. The HID is also undeveloped, most of us are used to a keyboard/mouse/touch screen to surf, TV's are still stuck with legacy remotes...Just entering a Facebook password is a real pain. Web sites are not designed for TV's yet, and so the aspect and content can get screwed up...

So, wait a while, let Linux mature on these TV's and let the GNU/GPL guys develop software once the standards have been ratified. We are 3 years away from a pleasant user experience of Internet and TV. TV's are the logical centric target for home entertainment, they will soon get hard drives/ media libraries (copyright permitting) and other sensible intefaces, such as small customisable tablet remotes, web cams and motion sensors. They will become the de facto media content delivery system within the house once again. They will start to offer gaming, nibbling away at wi's and PS3's etc. There will no longer be a clutter of remotes, consoles, PVR's , wires plugs and DVD's around the TV. People are far more tolerant of large TV's and this space will house anything you have now, integrated and central.

There will be early adopters...It's always paltry in the beginning, just give it time..

That's what I think anyway.

Internet TVs have been around since 2001.

The push is only happening now that download speeds have become fast enough to provide the streaming that TV is suitable for and because TV screen technology is capable of showing clear text and graphics.

I beg to differ. Sony started the trend in 2007...

Are you referring to some experimental near/non commercial box ?
Or referring to TV Broadcast over the Internet as opposed to a TV that connects to the Internet via your ISP ?

TV that connects to the Internet via your ISP ? It was actually 2000.

Commercial but a flop. Still supported though. Here is their front page

Video on demand over ethernet has been around a lot longer.

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

A TV that uses a phone line to a fixed ISP with no way out of the Bush portal and a commercial failure. Not my idea of an Internet TV, and does not compare to the Internet enabled TV's the OP or I was referring to. My points about the current crop and early adopters remain.

A tad moot Tom ?

Not true at all. You could surf to any site. It was Internet TV by definition - using the technology of the day.

It's pretty pointless to compare it with what you can get today. You said currently it is early days for internet TV. I'm suggesting that ten years ago was in fact, early days.

IMO, the OP would do better to buy a non-Internet TV and with the money saved, buy some other internet device and hook that up to the TV.

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

Thank you all for your advice. Very interesting responses.

In the end the TV I got has LAN capability (but that was not why I bought it) however, I suspect I won't use it that much. Will report back in a month or so to say if I used it at all.

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

I have a Sammy too. I use the Media Player in it all the time - I don't tend to watch anything but that in the evening unless a live event is on.

In 3 years, I've used the YouTube thing about 10 times and the other Internet stuff I rarely use - it takes 2 minutes to load.

Oh and my TV is connected to my network via Ethernet.

FWIW, Swisscom TV is MS IPTV. You know that, right?

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

I have Samsung TV with internet feature. I only used it once or twice to check that it works, and then never again. The functionality they provide is working well and is easy to use, but of course not comparable to what one can do with a normal PC or even an iPad.

In my opinion is quite a useless gimick - but if you do not have a laptop you can use in the sofa, perhaps it could be of some use.

Re: Internet TV - Is it worth it?

We use AppleTV (1stGen) to stream movies, TV shows and limited internet. But YouTube is actually cool on the big screen. I might do a bit more internet surfing if there was a better input device. Also, my 2 year old Samsung TV has a very limited set of widgets. In the US, I could do much more.

What I would like to do is stream NFL or TV shows from my Mac Book Pro to the TV. Not sure if a miniDVI to HDMI cable will do the trick. I might be able to get my brother to rig a SlingBox, but anyone got any other ideas?

Maybe it is better on another thread...
