Private radio??? [Unexpected letter from Billag]

I just received a bill from a company charging me for private radio and tele

The weird thing is i don't even turn on the TV for the whole month! Not to say the PRIVATE tele...

I do listen to the radio tho, but it's like the only channel in my studio (no idea how to switch channels...) The hosts rarely talk, when they talk, they talk in German. Most of the times, it's pure music. How can I tell it's a public channel or a private one?

Any one can advise???

Re: Private radio???

Does it have the letters B, I, L, L, A and G written at the top of it?

Re: Private radio???

Probably, as so often, DB is right. I suggest you do a search for BILLAG on here. Don't bother about a Google search or Advanced search, just type in Billag and take your pick of the 31 Threads on the subject - mostly horrified, mostly indignant, join the club.

Sorry, I should be more sympathetic but to someone who has been around for a time, it is like seeing a fat man slipping on a banana skin. One shouldn't laugh but it's so hard not to. Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.

in switzerland you pay for TV and radio via a company called billag if you have internet, a mobile phone, car radio etc.

if you do not have internet, a mobile phone , tv or radio or any other possible way of recieving it then you dont have to pay.

as you have a radio and tv, then you need to pay, it doesnt matter if its on or not, you have the ability to recieve it.

i guess the letter is from billag and no other company

Re: Private radio???

Two solutions:

1) Pay aforementioned love letter from Billag

2) Ceremoniously throw all electronic devices (including car radio) into a shallow ditch, fill hole with petrol, set alight, stand back, warm hands, then add Billag invoice to the flames. Two problems sorted simultaneously.

Simples.

The radio/TV set is private in the sense that it belongs to you, as opposed to you watching/listening in a public place - at least that's what I assume you are referring to.

TV/radio license fees exist pretty much everywhere in Europe, the money is used (hopefully) to fund public TV and radio channels which would otherwise have to broadcast 20 minutes of adverts every hour...

Even if you do not have a TV or radio you have to pay billag if you have the outlet for it in your house, and if you have a car, which has capabilities for a radio whether you use it or not...just one of those unknown taxes we all "love"

That is completely wrong.

You must pay Billag only if you own equipment capable of receiving TV or Radio transmissions. TV, Radio, Computer, Handy, car radio.

You can own an aerial, a satellite dish, or rent a wall socket and not pay the Billag.

Maybe each canton does it differently, cause friends of mine had no TV and no radio, they still had to pay...they even said because you can watch TV on computers now, then just having a computer should count...

Yes, I think that's right. We pay billag for our Obwalden address, where we spend a lot of time and which is our official home, and also has telephone, broadband etc. So even if we had no TV or radio we'd still be liable.

Whereas the tiny flat we have in town does not have a phone line or any internet connection, and isn't our main address. So we don't pay anything there.

Although as it happens, the last time I tried, some years back, there was a TV signal coming through the socket, with 80+ channels, which we never asked or paid for. But crucially no TV or computer in the flat.

Please support your statements with some evidence, otherwise it can be confusing.

No every Canton is exactly the same. Your friends can claim Billag Premiums back if they were wrongly charged,

Refers to all devices with which it is technically possible to receive radio and / or TV programs. In addition to radio and TV including taking multifunctional devices (eg computer or mobile phone).

Which is what I wrote above.

Well regardless, no one is going to live without either a TV, phone, computer, car or clock, which often have radios, so point of the whole topic, pay Billag whether you understand and think it makes sense or not...

Re: Private radio??? [Unexpected letter from Billag]

I got a billag direct debit come out for 450CHF last month. I assume its for the year but that seems incredibly steep. Can anyone confirm if this is the going rate or am I being done up like a kipper ?

thanks

Mike

@MikeB - Yes, it's yearly now but you can elect to pay quarterly. See this thread for further information - Billag now a single payment per year
