Most annoying issue I'm having is the stability of the network using the Samsung box as the modem. I get frequent dropouts, via Ethernet and wifi, plus my Airport Express, used to stream music to speakers, is constantly dropping off the network completely. I was previously using the Ubee modem + Airport Extreme base station which was solid as a rock, and I'm sorely tempted to go back to that combination.
Never change a running system. I also have the Ubee modem and told the guys on the phone that I want to keep it. They had to manually process the order, which took forever, but it was well worth the wait as it seems.

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Yeah, I remember you saying before that they had to do this. I don't know where the problem is at the moment, I may just turn off DHCP on the Samsung and let the AirPort Extreme handle that instead, not sure yet.

Grrr...add freezing VNC sessions to the list of grumbles earlier. This is starting to get tedious.

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Bit of a bugger... WPS is disabled on the Horizon box...No idea why, had to hook up my WiFi printers via USB and set up the WiFi settings manually. That's going to be a pain for novices.

It locked up again today, 3rd time in 2 weeks, its not running too warm like the old Thomson, which caused lock-ups and was cured by placing the unit on a USB powered laptop cooler. I have done this with the Horizon now, and will monitor the situation.

Also, my Wifi Routers in AP or Bridge mode no longer work, so they have been placed back in router mode on their own Networks and wired into the Horizon with long Ethernet cables. A step backwards.

UTH,

You seem to be knowledgable about the DLNA capabilities. What does this mean? Can I stream videos from the Horizon box to another box via DLNA or is it that the Horizon box can stream videos from another DLNA box (or both)?

Thanks,
Dan

It's a DLNA Server and Client, The DLNA player can access other DLNA servers (Microsoft Windows Media Servers (i.e. Music stored on your PC), NAS devices with DLNA servers , MediaMonkey etc).

iPads and other clients such as Samsung/Sony/LG TV's etc can access the Horizon too, as it acts as a DLNA Server.

DLNA confuses the client/server model,
in DLNA speak , the Horizon is a DMP, DMR and DMC
It is not a DMS (server) , as it doesn't actually store Media. (Although, I have not yet seen if it can serve up the recorded TV programs on it's internal hard disk via DLNA - now that would be a plus.)

My DMP (iPad/TV) will query the DMR (Horizon) which will retrieve the media from my DMS (Synology NAS)
(My NAS, is also a DMR, so in effect, my iPad etc can access the NAS directly)

I have not yet tested the Horizon with DAS, i.e. a USB drive plugged in. It may be that the Horizon will serve up that too...
I am not sure if the DAS can be accessed via the network either, which would allow a laptop to download music and copy it over the network to the USB driv plugged into the Horizon. I have yet to explore the USB/LAN and eSATA ports on the Horizon, eSATA is most likely disabled, USB will probably not be accessible via the network etc. This box has had a lot of features/functionality pulled from it, such as WPS (Push button Wireless association) and 5GHz WiFi....Saving license fees / royalty fees I suppose. It really could have been an all singing all dancing box, but it is crippled.

Ok thanks. I was wondering if you could stream from it to another device. Potentially one that might have a nice interface. I'll probably end up getting the box sooner or later.

Wouldn't the Horizon be a DMS since it is storing shows that you've recorded?

The recorded TV is not available via the Horizon DLNA... It is available via the "My Recordings" function of the Horizon Recorder interface. "My Recordings" or "Recordings" is not a DLNA catalogue heirarchy, "Videos" , "Music" and "Photos" are.

I believe the HD stores encrypted recordings, and that the DLNA on the Horizon can not access the hard disk directly, thus it has no access to this storage and cannot claim to be a DMS. If , and I have yet to test, it catalogues a local USB stick, and serves this up, then it is then a DMS.

Yes, with DLNA, the storage , presentation, rendering and playback are all different layers and can each involve a different device.

There are iOS apps that play stuff presented by the Horizon box.
On my iPhone, I can load a song presented by my Horizon, which is stored on my NAS and choose to play it on my LG TV. I do not have to play it on my iPhone when I use my iPhone app, the iPhone app can act as a remote control , integrating the DMS, DMR and DMP. Through a Browser, on any device, I can access my NAS, and choose to play a song through my Samsung HT.

That's too bad. I was hoping DLNA was an "approved" way of streaming encrypted recordings to other devices. If they followed certain rules, they could prevent copying. Then it would be possible to just record with the Horizon but use your own personal favorite system for streaming and watching.

A couple of questions about the Horizon box....can you set it to default to a certain sound selection, like the current box? For instance, you can tell it to default to a English audio if it's available. However, I wish it would default to German Dolby Digital when English is not available (have to manually change that).

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can start watching a recording until it's finished. Kind of annoying when you just want to start watching a bit later. I've gotten around this by just tuning to it and then hitting pause. However you still can't rewind to before the point where you've paused, eve if the box was set up to record the show via the dvr function.

Does the Horizon box improve any of this? Or, god forbid, is it even worse?

Thanks,
Dan

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

I also have some questions about the Horizon box from Cablecom. I have got the box and installed it. Everything is fine for TV / recording etc. I have been trying to set-up so that I can view things from my ipad on the TV and vice versa. I have connected my ipad to the Horizon box using the wi-fi and have downloaded the "Twonky Beam" to my ipad. Now:

I can see in the "my devices" section of the horizon box the ipad and view photos on the TV.

I can see music and videos that are on the ipad but cannot play them. Any ideas why?

I have no idea how to "beam" the TV to my ipad so that I can watch it on ipad. Any ideas how to do this?

Hope someone understands my questions (!) and can help!

Ran into a problem here, too: my TV guide isn't working. It's just showing "no programmer information available" for all programs. What can I do? How long is it supposed to take to download the program information?

Yes, you can set it to default to English audio.

And you can start watching a programme that you are also recording (unlike the crappy Cisco box)

The Horizon box can be irritating - mine currently can't 'see' my iPad and appears to miss recordings (although that might be down to human error…) not to mention the lack of slow-mo/frame-advance on pause and that a program's 'info' is not saved along with the recording and the annoying menu system all to save a few extra buttons on the remote - but it's still many times better than that Cisco crap. That's not an endorsement - just an indication of how bad the previous recorder was.

The customers who got the new Horizon box are just test cases for Cablecom to see if thier new product works. And they have to pay for this!!!!
Cablecom are simply ripping off their customers-nice to see that there is a vote coming up soon which is really aimed at such companies.

What has been people's experience with the accuracy of the guide for recordings? If it's using the same database as the Cisco box then I assume it will have the same problems. All the time, I see the name of the next show scrolling by on the front of the box, meaning the box "thinks" the show has already started, yet it hasn't. The previous show is still going. The Horizon box does have an "automatic" setting for show start/stop time adjustment but I would guess that only checks to see if the guide has been updated with a new start/stop time. So crappy guide database, you're out of luck. Also if the "automatic" setting is on, the option to record a few minutes before/after is disabled.

The UPC website for "all about Horizon" has zilch about the dvr functionality. The users guide has two whole pages, which are 80% filled with just a screenshot. There are 1-2 more pages on conflict management. That's it.

I think these companies must view good dvr functionality as being of no benefit to them and even a disadvantage. Why else would it be so bad? As someone already mentioned, setting up favorites and then the box only using favorites for "everything" would make perfect sense. Imagine, it would be faster since it doesn't have to scan through 200 channels but just the 20 you care about. The database has just been greatly reduced.

However, if the dvr functionality works well, you're never going to watch their crappy shopping channels filled with ads they want you to see (at least not me ), and gee, if you can actually get the dvr to record that movie, without chopping the end or the beginning, well then you're sure not going to pay them the chufs to get it from their "on demand". In addition, you're likely to skip all the commercials when you watch things prerecorded. So zero benefit to them....but oh wait, there is "customer satisfaction".

Dan
