Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Cablecom have a half-price offer at the moment on the Horizon box (half price for 12 months after which it doubles). It says for new customers only but in the small print it actually includes people like me who have an obsolete TV package (6 CHF/month for the "classic" channels).

Trouble is, what to do after the 12 months are up. 29 CHF/month is a lot; hopefully there'll be another offer.

Switch to Swisscom? Or at least threaten to, unless they continue the offer?

If you have a 6chf/month package that includes the classic channels (usually the ones that have a lot worth watching), I wouldn't touch it.

That's been my logic for the last 3 years! But ... sometimes I think about splashing out to get the recording features to save me connecting my laptop and running iPlayer, 4oD etc.

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Having marginally roasted Cablecom in posts passim, a little research reveals that their German-language forums have been steaming about all the issues Horizon has, to the extent that they invited a few of the contributors to a meeting. This thread (German, but if anyone wants a translation I can oblige) indicates that improvements (such as a proper remote app rather than just a thing for streaming TV from the 'net, and a list view in the recording library, and performance improvements in the menu system, and, and) are on the way via a major update due in Q2'13. As always, take an announced target date with a pinch of salt, but this is at least a bit encouraging:

Well they had some years to test their software or are they simply testing it on their paying customers. What a joke!

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

I heard bad stories about the Horizon. UPC already had it up for offer in The Netherlands for a while. Lots of complications with specific tvs and the user interface/box is quite slow.

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Ok so the Horizon box has been in folks homes for a wee while, and before everyone shouts about it being not as good as something offered on the planet Zog or anywhere right of Fulham... we are here... in Switzerland... and we got what we got (rightly or wrongly

Now that's out the way my questions are simple, is the Horizon box better that the heap of crap Cisco box which has always been a bit of a dog tbh, but has been really playing up for a few weeks now, not recording, recording bit's, and tonight we have the EPG in 2 languages for the same channel

We are also moving at the end of the month, so I have to speak to Cablecom anyway to notify them, so am I just as well to take the plunge and getting Horizon at the new place? I'm also considering a switch to Swisscom, but I'm on the CHF 78 pm deal and I get 100 meg which is good and stable (and available at the new place), so it's only really the Cisco box that lets Cablecom down. Swisscom would be CHF 71 pm more at CHF 149 and I'd only get 50 meg internet which I had before and it was fast enough, but is Swisscom TV and it's box CHF 78 pm better?

I also want to have full TV functionality on 2 TV's in different rooms, how do the providers cope with that?

Thanks in advance for any advice

don't necessarily have to speak to them, you can report your move on myupc.ch

good thing you waited, if you don't get the combi the horizon box is 50% OFF at the moment...

by UPC I guess you need a Digicard for the 2nd set as the Horizon box only has 1 HDMI output. Or you can always use your iPad to watch streaming TV.

Re: UPC Cablecom - NEW HD Box Launching in 2012

Well Swisscom is quality . Cablecom is speed. Attention: 50 meg with Swisscom is only if you have a Glass fibre connection in your home. If you get Swisscom then you can cancel your cable plug connection for TV and radio.Thats also 28 Franks less. Then you are paying 121 Franks. The speed you get by Cablecom is never what is stated. With Swisscom it is always what you get.

That's right. It's more. I'm on Cablecom 100:

Oh, and if you opt for Cablecom's digital phone you cancel Swisscom's CHF25.35 per month...

I've run the same test and have seen the same great speed, but only once. It seems to vary a lot. Sometimes I only get 20Mbps. It can be issues with your own local network but I was on a wired connection.

Here's an other:

But yes, I can only get this speed using a data cable directly from my Apple Time Machine. Wireless is 80 and down to 35 in other rooms away from the router. But with data cable it's usually over 100Mbps...

Well I agree that Cablecom is faster, for sure.

But as you've said, you only get that speed with wired. Most people use wireless, so honestly the speed difference between Cablecom and Swisscom is meaningless.

In fact most people who want the Cablecom speed, probably want it to download video, because Cablecom's tv service isn't giving them what they want.

I disagree entirely. Such a blanket generic statement is totally wrong.

Neither Swisscom nor Cablecom nor any provider offering consumer services can or do guarantee their bandwidths.

Swisscom copper connections are subject to copper line length and the quality varies hugely, which impacts the speed.

Cable connections do not suffer such problems, my Cablecom speed is very consistent and reliable and always delivers me 150 Mbps.

oh someone has written something bad (probably from a 100yr-old house) - that must mean that the whole company's network is unreliable... right?!

btw for anyone not reaching normal speeds, a measurement of cabling (coax or copper) quality is always a gratis option from all carriers.
