How to unlock iphone 3G?

so, now I have my precious iphone 4 with orange prepaid - thanks to your help on my other thread - I cannot really afford to throw my 3G 4.2.1. in the zürisack (nor give it in for recycling). so I had the cracked screen repaired in 1,5 minutes at the apple store in bahnhofstrasse - great service. the idea was that I can pass it on to my daughter (imagine her enthusiasm). ONLY PROBLEM: they were so quick that I forgot to consider that it was LOCKED!
therefore I cannot use it, after having payed 109 CHF to repair it. the guy at orange tried to make the sim work, but it didn't.

now I need to UNLOCK it, don't I?
I've already tried downloading a few programs and reading as much info as possible, including other "unlock" threads on EF... not all encouraging, I'm afraid. to no avail - after downloading the program (for instance Snowbreeze) I cannot get it started.

I'm feeling terribly stupid - can anyone help me by telling me how to unlock it so that I can use it with an orange prepaid sim?

thank you!

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

Assuming ( always a dangerous move ) that it is a contract phone that has run out of contract, if you contact the original airtime provider, they will get in touch with apple, and the next time you connect to itunes, it will go through a process and become unlocked.

Well that is how it worked with my swisscom iphone.

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

The second option is YouTube there are thousands of videos on IPhone unlock and jail break. I unlocked my IPhone using one of these videos. You need to pay attention on version number and modem firmware. Good luck.

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

If the 3g is out of contract go to the airtime provider and they take a number from the phone, and inform Apple (I think) to get this number released, and send you an email, and it was waiting for me when I got home 30 mins later. Follow the instruction then sync the phone and bingo job done.... all legit, no hassle, no jailbreaking etc.... dead easy.

I did this in June with my Swisscom 3g, and when Apple replaced the phone on the thread below, I sync'd it and it unlocked straight away. iphone 3 exchange... where's the catch

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

thanks guys!
yes, I see one important info was missing: this is a German Telekom iphone after end of contract. so now I hope they'll be as cool as the swiss colleagues and have a look at their homepage if the option "unlock" is foreseen.

will post if it works!

I don't think they have a choice. Once the contract period is over, they can no longer lock the phone to them. Call their customer services and they will guide you through the process.

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

I used a piece of software called GreenPoison. It worked well, but I have a few tips. First, make sure that you wait for the software to do its thing. I spent all night when I first moved to Switzerland unlocking my iphone 3GS. There is a step when the software is working and I thought that it was getting locked up and I kept restarting my phone. I would recommend instead going through the GreenPoison tools and then letting it set overnight and checking in the morning if it worked. Its been a bit since I went through this, but this was recommended by the website lifehacker which seems to have very good tips.

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

HELP - I've tried to start the process in the suggested way but cannot find a page from where to dowload the prerequisite PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition - but I can't seem to find a dowloadable link, the file seems to have removed...

any idea as to where I can find the the file?

THANKS!

Re: How to unlock iphone 3G?

now it finally worked, without jailbreaking! I managed to unlock LEGALLY (to reassure papa goose ) over the german telekom page. the process was badly explained, that's why it took me so long to put together other all necessary information. but as usual the most precious advice came from EF.

thank you SO much
