Getting the most out of my Fritz!Box

I recently got my internet, telephone and TV service set-up. No Cablecom in my area but my building has fibre optic service through MyGate/Litecom. Everything goes through the supplied Fritz!Box 7270 and, whilst I can set up the basic internet and TV side of things, I don't know much about telephones. I'm gradually getting through the 192 page manual but in the meantime can anyone explain in simple terms what these features are, and if I will find them useful?

  • DECT base station for connecting up to six cordless telephones
  • Enlarges as a DECT repeater the range of cordless phones (hardware version 3 and above)
  • Telephone system for Internet and fixed-line telephony (ISDN or analog)
  • Up to 5 integrated answering machines and fax function, both with e-mail forwarding

Do I just get a regular cordless phone and plug it in? Can I make calls from my mobile via the Fritz!Box? Any benefits to ISDN telephones?

Thanks.

Re: Getting the most out of my Fritz!Box

Yes you can plug in a regular wired or cordless phone, but you will need to also subscribe to a VoIP service provider such as voipcheap.com or voipbuster.com - there are literally dozens out there... search here for VoIP and you can read up on the previous discussion

Re: Getting the most out of my Fritz!Box

Hi,

I have a Fritz 7270 at home and have been happily using it for quite a while now. I have VOIP via Switzernet, CHF 9 per month and all my calls to Blighty and Canada are free. Swiss fixnet is free and Natel 11 Raps a minute. I'm beaming to 2 Siemens portable phones but I think any DECT phone would do.

I'll be upgrading to a Fritz 7390 (VDSL) soon, so would be happy to receive offers for my 7270.

Thanks for that. Have you set up the built-in answering machine/mailboxes? I have a DECT phone with no answering machine and have been meaning to sort out a mailbox for messages.

I also need to sort out a VOIP provider.

I have a portable hard-drive plugged in an operating as a NAS but the drive never seems to power down. Not sure if that is a setting in the 7270 or the drive (Buffalo) but it's on the list of things to sort out.
