How to register a website

Hi There

I was wondering if some one knows where and how to register for a web site? I have finally decided to start my web site. I had done a course here in the Klubschule long back, but until now could just manage to start a blog. One question, might be silly to ask is that if I am in Zürich should I take the Domain name .com or .ch and any other advice regarding the web site is highly appreciated. I was looking around on the net but there are so many places where in I could register but before doing that I wanted some input from people who has already done this.

I hope I have posted it at the right heading.

Thanks for looking.

Best Regards

Re: How to register a website

You need to think of a suitable domain name ( mybusinesscatchyname.ch ) and pay CHF17 a year to maintain it. ( SWITCH )

Then rent web space ( called web hosting ) and then add your files.

There are many options, but the above is a very simplified version.

There are many on EF who can do it all for you.

Re: How to register a website

There are many vendors. The question is, can you write html, CSS, php or whatever? Or will somebody help you?

HOSTPOINT has an integrated Wordpress tool. They also have some free templatest to use.
I was very satisfied with them. But now I'm on Web Hosting Hub

I've got a .com page. It's international. .ch is better if you start a business in Switzerland.
It always depends what you're doing.
I hope this helps.

Re: How to register a website

As already said, you need to think what domain name you want. You need to buy that from a domain registrar.

If you want a .ch domain, you have more limited choices for registering it, but you can still get it cheaper than from switch.ch, on the other hand if you want a .com, there are masses of choice.

Many domain registrars will provide you with basic website hosting, or allow you to build an online shop using their tools for a minimal charge. You only need a web designer and developer if you have very specific needs, and it's generally better to get your business going first so that you can learn what your detailed needs are for a custom site. I say this because web design and development are expensive, and it can be hard to know what yo are getting unless you already have expertise in the area.

Very few people ever need to learn HTML or CSS or PHP to build modest business sites, and those with loads of money who need a big fancy site can afford to get someone else to do it for them, so don't be put off by tech talk.

Feel free to ask more questions if it isn't clear so far.

Hi Glasgo Girl

Thanks for your input. I did a course in migros "How to built a website" two years ago when I was very much willing to start a website. But it didnt work out becasue the course was in german and I found it complicated but slowely I started a blog and also a free google web site for family photos and stuff and that worked. So now I wanted to start a cooking web site with recipes, but just as hobby. The terms which you have metioned above I am not very familiar with but I guess I can try on my website some work and by "trail and error"., it my work. I think .com sounds better.

Have a good evening.

Re: How to register a website

Today I was sitting on the net and bumped on this free web site and started working on it. It sounded workable but it has advertisements and stuff coming on this. So as earlier said I wanted a proper cooking web site and now I seriously want to do it. I have so many recipes which so many people can enjoy and benefit from, as I teach Indian cooking in Migros and also teach cooking to the local kids in school. Last year I opened a Koch-klub and have so many things I want to put. Have a look and do give your feedback. http://itytiwari.webs.com/bermich.htm I am a beginner at this.

But this effort of mine is not a business venture so I dont want to spend much money here.

Thanks.

Hi There

Thanks for your tips. Now things are getting a bit clear to me. I would like to have a domain with .com. Now as you mentioned there are loads of choices, so could you tell me some one or two places where in I could register my domain name. What are the modes of payment here, is it just with credit card or can I also pay through the bank.
As I wrote in my another reply this is not a business venture, I would like to do it myself.

Thanks again and have a good evening.

Re: How to register a website

I think people overcomplicate it a bit. I have a few websites and 90% of them have domain names and hosting from the same company as part of the same package. So you just choose your own domain name, go to one of such registrars and they also offer you Web hosting. I can recommend three from a dozen that I used.

1) godaddy.com is probably the most famous, quite cheap.
2) 1and1.com is the second most popular registrar.
3) aruba.it is my personal favourite.

At aruba, for EUR25 a year you can have a domain name and unlimited hosting space. On the other two, it may work out more expensive but they do have special offers on a regular basis so if you keep an eye, you may get a 1 year hosting with a domain for something like EUR1.

Most of my sites are now on aruba, just one on godaddy. I used to have a couple on 1and1, too.

Starting a Web site can in fact begin with just one file. Name it index.html and put it in the root of your server and off you go

Re: How to register a website

Hi pink pompom,

Sorry I'm a little late to the party here. Just wanted to chime in and answer any questions you might have about Web Hosting Hub. One domain registration is included free with the purchase of a hosting plan. You can pay for hosting with either a credit card or through PayPal.

I can't say enough about how easy WordPress is to use and build a site. There are so many themes (even ones you can easily customize) that make it easy to give your site the look and feel you want. There are even plugins for recipes. I found 47 by doing a quick search at the WordPress website for recipe plugins.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to help!

Hi Christini

Thanks for your input. I am a bit overwhelmed and by so many responces that its almost getting a bit difficult for me to decide what to choose. As you know I am intereted in making a web site mainly with recipes so what you suggested here sounds good to me. Could you either send me a PM or a mail with more info on that.

I really appreciate it.

Have a good evening.
