Re: Amazing... an i7 Samsung laptop for 449 CHF from InterDiscount, today only!!

I was able to run mine for 4h+ on batteries which is pretty good for an i7.

There's also an option in bios, which I'd recommend everyone who mostly works plugged in, to enable - you can prevent the laptop from charging the battery over 80%, which will help keep its maximum capacity for much longer. Otherwise it will be down to 80% in a couple of months anyway.

And for anyone who doesn't want to reinstall - all of this Samsung software is started via "Task Scheduler" - you can disable it there, but I recommend you keep the Easy Display Mgr on as it is responsible for the functionality of Fn special keys. All the rest I have disabled. There's also a Samsung Update service running, which can be disabled via "Services" or msconfig.

You can buy an universal power supply... few euros, really!!!

A laptop will definitely work more quietly on a plastic specific tray with fan because it will use less the fans... It can reduce around 5/10degrees and that really makes a difference.

If you put it on your blanket or sofa its baaaad, the heat stays, more noise, etc...
I meant the internal power supply; where you have to take out the mother board & butcher it.

Re: Amazing... an i7 Samsung laptop for 449 CHF from InterDiscount, today only!!

Weh hey. It arrived this morning!! It looks great, even better due to being half price!

so if offers come up again, it's worth it to scroll down all the pages of their online brochure to see if there are any other great deals, as this one was listed half way down on page 5. None of the shop staff I'd called earlier mentioned it, and it wasn't displayed together with the other samsung.

Could you explain how to do this for dummies?

maybe it's just a blown capacitor or cut pcb track. maybe fixable with a soldering iron.

I was using this today & suddenly the display rotated 90 degrees!

I eventually found that a right click on the desktop brings up graphic options; one of them is rotate

Not as good as the original offer but still...

ASUS Ultrabook UX31E-RY027V is 3 hundred less now (CHF 899.00 instead of CHF 1199.00).

Also, today is the end of 20% off all the laptops offer at Migros.

Am I missing something?, the Samsung had quad i7 processors & 6GB memory
ASUS Ultrabook has I3 processors & 4Gb memory, no DVD, no wired LAN but it is smaller & more portable - seems expensive @ 899?

Yeah, it's a poor deal-
The poster probably focused on "-300chf" discount, but it's really still expensive, or at least not a sweet deal, at that price...
I checked on toppreise, there's no more that model, but there's very very similar specs and size for not much...

So... it's just nothing compare to that rare super deal of an I7 for 449chf!

Amazon.co.uk has it for £399.99 with an AMD so CHF 631.20 for an Intel seems a pretty good deal, in my opinion.

You just haven't caught up, Ultrabooks is the new definition of mobile computing To be honest, I've not bought in yet myself but this price also looks good as I couldn't quickly find any equivalent for less than a grand.

On lenovo.co.uk this configuration is £493.03 but today you can still get 10% off because of Paddy's Day promotion. On lenovo.ie it's actually a bit cheaper.

About "You just haven't caught up, Ultrabooks is the new definition of mobile computing"
Me2; not caught up I mean.
I think if wanted to go in that direction then a Tablet would be more convenient? I guess I do not know enough about the topic but I suppose the boundary between Tablets & Ultrabooks is a bit hazy?
Ultrabooks have a keyboard & you have USB so you can get stuff back out?

Depending on the tablet, you generally cannot do a lot of business style applications. Though, add a bluetooth keyboard and iWorks on an iPad and you do get close-ish.... the big advantage there is of course the battery time at about 10 hours on average compared to 4 max on most laptops.

Android tablets are a bit more flexible there, but then again, you won't get the software quality of iworks etc there, and I do not think there is Open/Libre/etc-Office yet for Android anyway.

i think this is one thing i'm also encountering - the use case for a laptop is increasingly being squeezed between what can be done on a desktop and a tablet.

there are few things that a laptop does better than a tablet and a desktop PC.

I pickled up the Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook a couple of weeks back, i7 processor and a nice little machine all round. I couldn't imagine trying to use and Office applications on a tablet.

Yes but for business applications I use my "i7 Samsung laptop for 449 CHF" that I was lucky enough to buy.

For portability & no requirement for business applications I have an Ipad.

I just do not see where an ultrabook would fit into my life; especially at those prices! Plus the ultrabook offered has only 128GB SDD; I could not live happily without a lot more GB.

Just had a look on the Lenovo UK website and some of the RRP prices look a little suspect e.g. the ThinkPad Tablet 16GB wifi (Android) was £710, but now only £359.. yeah right

That's why I went for the Acer, it has a 500GB HDD and 20GB SSD for fast booting.
I also have to factor in the competition for the iPad between myself, the missus and 2 adolescent girls

Must admit that retrieving the IPAD from the missus is not easy; not sure retrieving an Ultrabook would be easier
