| | Orange ADSL vs Swisscom
Hi all,
We've been in Geneva now for 2 weeks and are desperate to get onto the internet (it's amazing how disconnected you begin to feel when you no longer have webmail access at work!) Anyway, we are set up with a Swisscom phone line at home now, but have yet to get a net connection sorted. I've done as much research as I can and it all seems seems to be much of a muchness...every provider of ADSL seems to charge the same for their 3500 package.
EXCEPT Orange, who give you a discount if you're a customer. Seeing as we are, this is an attractive offer, but I've got no idea what their service/connection is like. I did a search through the forum but couldn't find a reference to Orange ADSL, so was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on Orange as an ADSL provider in general, on them vs Swisscom, or can provide any other suggestions as to who a good provider is.
Thanks in advance!
G
PS For the record, we can't get Cablecom in our building, and the Orange offering is attractive as they give you a wireless router, which Swisscom don't as I understand it...

Hi there,
What I meant about the wireless router was that Orange give ("rent") you their Livebox router for free, whereas Swisscom charge you a load to buy one upfront....or is that wrong? Are there certain deals where they supply the router to you as well?
Thanks,
G

For the great majority of the domestic normal users there will be no discernible difference between Swisscom's and Orange's ADSL.
There are introductory offers to Bluewin ADSL that throw in the router every now and then.

Ok, thanks for the feedback.
We'll give Orange a shot as don't feel like paying Swisscom any more than we already have!
Cheers,
G

The one thing you need be aware about - if you don't have cable in your building, and wish to apply to Bluewin TV (ADSL cable TV), then you have to have Bluewin ADSL. I do not know whether Orange has a similar offering.

If you are under 26 and registered student, you can get half price discount for 3.5 MB Swisscom connection.

I have had very bad experiences with Orange ADSL and also their methods are not transparent. Customer Care is horrible and unfriendly and except for the word sorry they have no explanations. Lots of billing and technical issues faced. Please also read the Contract terms in detail as they are very bad when one wants to cancel contracts. I just wanted to share you my experience with Orange in general. The future is surely not Orange
Waiting for the end of Orange contract and will try sunrise or swisscom |

While the basic DSL packages are pretty much the same (as a matter of fact, all Orange does is re-sell Swisscom DSL packages...), you also might want to look at Swisscom's Infinity package - for 69 Fr. (+ the basic subscription fee for your phoneline) you'll get the maximum available speed your line offers plus free calls to all Swiss landline numbers 24/7.
If VDSL is available in your place (which, btw., is also necessary to get BW-TV), your max speed could be up to 20'000k. Meaning that you'll end up paying 69 Fr. per month for a 20 mbit/s line + free landline calls. Depending on your usage scenario, this could save you a ton of money - it did for us. If your max line speed is significantly lower, you might want to look at other offers, though. You can check your line here: http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/...iste/index.htm (click on "check your phone number")

I have had very bad experience with Orange ADSL.
See Orange ADSL killed my router
Also, does anybody know if Orange or Swisscom throttle bittorrent downloads?
I have a small impression that Orange does.
