Urgent - how to get Internet in hospital - samsung galaxy S with 'orange'

My son is in hospital and I am preparing to spend the next 4/5 days there with him while my wife can look after our 3 month old baby. I'm just packing the suitcase.

I want to get internet while there and I know you can get it through your phone. I have a samsung galaxy S and an orange contract. Can anyone walk me through what to do. I intend to leave for the hospital in an hour.

Thanks!!!

Re: Urgent - help needed

Hope your son will get well soon,

Please try this - I found it on the internet - and see if you still have issues with internet access via phone, sorry I don't have Samsung, so I cannot share my own experience with set up.

Try Settings/Wireless and Network/Mobile Networks/Use Packet Data (Not Data Roaming!!) Make sure you have a data plan with your network operator Orange.

INTERNET SETTINGS:

1. Touch the Menu key
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Wireless & networks
4. Touch Mobile networks
5. Use Packet Data *
6. Touch Save

Re: Urgent - how to Internet in hospital samsung galaxy S with 'orange'

I have that setting already thanks. I plugged my phone in using the USB cable and I do not see it on the list of networks available. I am currently connected to my home wifi. Thanks if you can help on the next step too!

I know that 'urgent' sounds urgent, but in this sort of case it might really help to say in the title what you need more accurately.
(I changed the title by the way!)

Hope that method works and that all four of you will be OK.

Ok, this is a different story, you want to have internet on your computer using your mobile, this is possible by setting both your computer and mobile, give me few min - will check how this can be done via Samsung and come back to you

You also need to check that the hospital actually allows you to use a mobile phone inside the building. Some don't, although Switzerland is more relaxed in this point then France or Germany.

On the other side, it might be worth asking the hospital whether it provides wired (or wireless) access points. That's not uncommon either.

I've been up there the last two days & nights following unplanned visit and just back now to gather stuff for potentially a longer haul. Fine to use internet there, they don't have wifi at least not in the room and I wont be going anywhere else. They ask you not to have your handy set loud on all the doors, that is all.

You should get the "Internet Mobile Plus" option first. Otherwise it will be very expensive for you. After the option started, press and hold the power button on the right side of your galaxy. A on/off option menu will show up. Make sure "data mode" is activated. Otherwise tip on it to activate it.

Re: Urgent - how to get Internet in hospital - samsung galaxy S with 'orange'

I have just tried these steps with my Andriod, and it worked!!

1) You may need this info, set up your phone to work as a modem.

Country: Switzerland
Network: Orange
APN: internet
Username: guest
Password: guest
DNS: 213.55.128.1
SMTP: smtp.orangemail.ch
Server: 212.35.35.5

2) Make sure to set your phone to “discoverable”. Then, go into system preferences, and to the bluetooth section. Check “support non-conforming phones”, and turn bluetooth on for your computer if it isn’t already turned on.

3) Next run your bluetooth device set-up (on the Mac it’s called “Bluetooth Setup Assistant”), and follow it through to the end, adding your cell phone as a paired device. If your cell phone is already paired, and after you go through the set-up steps you can’t connect your computer to the Internet with your phone, try unpairing and re-pairing your phone using these directions.

4) Next, go back to your computer’s system set-up (on the Mac it is “System Preferences”), and go to the Network panel. Select “Bluetooth” from the “Show” drop-down menu.

5) Click on “TCP/IP” and make sure that the “Configure IPv4″ drop-down is set to “Using PPP”.

6) Now click over to the “PPP” tab, and fill in the “Service Provider” blank with the name of your service provider. Some of this information may already be filled in for you from when you did the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.

7) Then add in the account name, password, and telephone number required by your provider. The “username” which you got from Ross’ site goes in the “Account Name” field, and the “password” goes in the “Password” field.

8) For telephone numbers try the following: I couldn't get what exactly is it for samsung, but for my android it worked with *99***2#

they say also try *99***2# or *99# (try both) - or try #777

9) Now, while you are there, take a look at the options under “PPP Options”. You will probably want to leave the advanced options alone, although some recommend unchecking “Send PPP echo packets” and “Use TCP header compression”. Play with it if you like.

10) But under Session Options, which is the top half of that window, I like to check “Connect automatically when needed”. What this does is it causes your computer to automatically reconnect if you lose the signal while connected through your cellphone.

11) However, what it also does is it tries to connect you through your phone automatically whenever you open your laptop. I personally find this less of a hassle and worth not having to manually reconnect if my connection gets dropped during a session.

12) Finally, go to the “Bluetooth Modem” section, and select whichever modem seems closest to your phone. When I was using my Sony Ericsson t616, it was the Ericsson Infrared modem script, despite the fact that I was actually using bluetooth. And in fact for my new Nokia 6620, I use the Nokia Infrared script. If you get no results from any of them, check out Ross Barkman’s Modem Scripts and see what he has for you. I’ve never had a problem with the phones I’ve tried and the modem scripts provided by Apple.

13) Also uncheck “Enable error correction and compression in modem”, and “Wait for dial tone before dialing”.

14) One last thing which you may want to do is to go to the “Show” drop-down, and select “Network Port Configurations”. This is where you tell your computer which Internet access method to try first, second, and third, and so on. I have mine set to try my built-in wifi first, then my bluetooth connection.

That’s it! You’re all done with the set up - be sure to check “Apply now” or “Save” before closing system preferences!

15) Now, it could well be that at this point your set-up will just work), so go ahead and try it. It could also be that you will need to add a few settings on your phone. In the case of my t616, I had to add the same settings from the PPP preferences pane (username, password, etc.) into the data connection information on my phone. With my Nokia, it just worked without my putting anything in the phone.

Good luck.

Yeah.. The hospital most probably has a wlan, and you just log in. Its even free, after you give them your email address.

Good luck with the stay. Take lots of change for the junk-food machines at 2am.

Eat what you want, drink what you want, just relax.
The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your boy will be

Enjoy having people cook & clean for you.

oh... and involve the siblings! It's their brother you're talking about, you know.
kids need their siblings.

The hospital should have a wifi network and you can pay per day (mine was 5 CHF a day) to get a username and password.

You then turn on wifi on the phone (applications, settings, wireless and network, , wifi settings, click wifi to turn it on. The available wfi networks will appear below. Select the one the hospital has and enter the username and password they give you.

If you are going to use a laptop, you have to set you galaxy as a wifi access point. Then your laptop can be connected to internet via your galaxy.
