Doctor Who is on Christmas Day; wonder if it'll be any good.

Curious as to why it was not on this autumn..

Because of Sherlock I would guess. New series of that starts on New Year's Day, only 3 episodes I think - at least it says 1/3 on the site's homepage for the 4th series, but I guess it could be a 3-part story to start off another 10 episode series. But they did say after the last Dr Who series that there would only be a Xmas special with the series not returning until 2017, probably around April/Easter time.

Really enjoyed 'In Plain Sight' 3 parter if you can get it on catch up. True story of a Scottish serial killer in the 1950's.

Wondering if I can con my OH into watching Seven Brides again. He knows that I know every word, but the other two are an easy shoo in. Just need Brigadoon and Fiddler on the Roof and I'm sorted! I'm the stupid cow whose never got to the end of 'The King and I' without crying, even when I saw it in the theatre.

Because South Africa didn't have tv until the mid 1970's, all these films are relatively new to my OH. If the stage version of 'Gypsy' gets repeated, please watch it for their brilliant version of 'You Gotta Get A Gimmick' if nothing else.

I love Seven Brides for seven Brothers. Sigh.

I have an un-recommendation: Netflix 's Van Helsing is dire. It doesn't know what it wants to be and consequently isn't much of anything other than one note and ridiculous.

Just got into Fargo though. Outstanding.

I quite liked Nurse Jackie, lead lady was in Sopranos and is good in this too. I thought i wouldn't like it because of the addiction theme but she is so good its good..

The OA on Netflix is right up there as as a top favorite. An excellent sci-fi, supernatural mystery, brilliantly written and the cast is excellent. Very close to the originality of Stranger things.. so if a fan of that one, The OA will definitely be of interest to you. I'm loving it.

Saw Doctor Who with my son yesterday and while good-ish, wish the writing was tighter as it dragged and stalled in places. Of course Capaldi saves the show as he is excellent - a weaker actor and I would've fallen asleep.

This is a hard one, of the most recents ones - Westworld, if you enjoy sci-fi; The Crown if historical fiction is your cup of tea; House of Cards for political intrigue; Homeland for a well-written action one; The Big Bang Theory for fun geeks; what would you like?

For those interested in food and travelling, this TV series has both of them. It's on Arte - Die kulinarischen Abenteuer der Sarah Wiener.

Well, I'd say that it's all right to fill a quiet moment. By an amazing coincidence, I was about to recommend another food programme. Much, much better, IMHO, is "Parts Unknown", available on Youtube. Presented by Anthony Courbain, who is the coolest, most street-smart cook bar none, as anyone who has read his "Kitchen Confidential" will know. Not for the oversensitive, but a cracking read for the rest of us. So cool is our Anthony that Obama asked to be filmed having noodles with him in a tiny restaurant Vietnam, Google it!

So, Parts Unknown takes one place at a time, just like dear Sarah Wiener, but adds more about the place and its politics. I just watched his take on Iran. I found it very moving, as well as mouth watering. I'll be working through the others that catch my fancy. Yum!

I've watched all the Parts Unknown and found them interesting and amusing.

I know him and don't like him very much. The show is OK (good, well very good, let's be fair lol) though but not due to his personality.

That's fun! He seems such a nice guy, but edgy too. It's always interesting to compare the screen persona of famous people with reality. In my limited experience, these top cooks love one thing above all - themselves :-).

Just to make myself clear: I wanted to say I know the show you were talking about and him, implicitely... but I can comment only on his screen persona!
I watched almost everything, from Raymond Blanc and Heston Blumenthal to, more recently, episodes from Dany's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives - goodness, a burger or a sandwich could mean so much more.. I really like to learn a trick or two from these guys. :-)

Heard about it and watched it few days ago.... Rubicon, only one season made in 2010. Interesting, too bad it did not got picked up for more seasons.
Now watching House of Cards season 4...

Another nod to The Crown series 1 on Netflix. Loved it.

The episode covering Winston Churchill and the famous Sutherland Portrait was by far my favorite - really stands out as a great piece of drama. Wasn't Lithgow remarkable as Churchill? Gobsmackingly good.. highly recommend watching it.

Sherlock is utter twaddle - and the writer should be shot.

(He failed to combine "I need to explain the lead character's past" with "comprehendible" plot)

Dexter ... prison break... the black list..

....... were great 5-10 years ago.

I actually commented to Mrs DK recently that I miss Dexter - especially the early seasons.
