In contrast to that, the Christmas special of Victoria was a pile of sentimental tosh and terribly twee.

I turned-off the Christmas Victoria special in disgust (and I'd been really looking forward to it).
Why? You both surprise me.
I'm not particularly keen on the series as a whole, but thought that episode was decent enough (in a 'killed a bit of time' kind of way).

Eeshhhh... I'm watching it for Maya Hawke and to be honest, I find she's the only character portrayal that makes it watchable. It's slow.

I quite like the series. At least it is rooted in real events, poetic license notwithstanding. The special Christmas night only had a brief reference to the slave trade, the crash of the railway companies and Prince Albert's brother's STDs from his whoring years in Paris. The rest was just sentimental padding.. with an anal Albert running about decorating his trees

.
On Netflix they have the older (I guess? Have no idea how old is the BBC's version) adaptation of the same novel - the movie with Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder. To be honest I never wanted to see the movie, loved the book too much...not even this adaptation and I love these actresses.

Btw, also on Netflix - you're right, "Godless" seems interesting.

Yep, I get you. Know a few people who have a deep attachment to the book.

The same is true of Wuthering Heights, no dramatization has ever touched the brilliance of the book. The exception for me being Austen's work which translates really well to screen with both Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, both of which I could either read or watch over and over again.

Have you seen Emily Dickinson A Quiet Passion movie on Netflix yet? Beautifully done, really loved it. I will certainly watch it again.

Wormwood on Netflix. True story of an American government scientist who jumped out of a window after being given LSD without his knowledge, as an experiment. It tracks the forty year search for truth by his family. Gripping.

My favourite tv drama of the Christmas season so far was 'The Miniaturist'. It was just so different to anything else around, and I highly recommend it.
There are parts of it I really like - the sets, costumes, atmosphere. The main character. The story is engaging. I refused to watch the violence in the first part though and it soured me on it a bit I‘ve recorded the second bit to watch today.

Ooo. The second part is a little more harrowing to be honest. Astonishingly, the author has been roundly criticised on social media for the issues at the heart of the story, even though they are historically accurate.

If you are into futuristic series, Netflix is starting a new futuristic / dystopian series at the beginning of February - Altered Carbon.

"Girlfriends is a contemporary story of Linda, Sue and Gail as they struggle with the responsibilities and inevitable changes that come with being a modern woman of a certain age."

I get it over Zattoo.

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Excellent topic. Here are some good suggestion from all sorts of genre:

- Modern Family. I was a bit skeptical at first but it turned out to be one of my favorites. It is comedy series, mockumentary style for an LA family. Tons of fun.

- The Office. I prefer the US version of the show. As an office worker I enjoy this mockumentary and regularly re-watch random episodes of the whole 9 seasons

- Altered Carbon. Excellent sci-fi from Netflix. 1 season - full story. Highly recommend of you like a good blade runner style sci-fi.

- Ugly Delicious. Netflix documentary series about, street food, sort of. It has episodes about tacos, pizza, fried chicken, etc. Really cool.

- Westworld. Waiting for Season 2. Amazing western type sci-fi with androids. Must watch.

- AWAITING: The Terror. Should start end of March. I highly anticipate these series based on Dan Simmons book of the same name. It tells the story of an expedition to the Arctic which goes terribly wrong.

UK gets it 23rd April at 4am - I think it's a simultaneous broadcast with the US. On Sky Atlantic in the UK.

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

If you like Dr. Who you may like this one as well.

Pros:
It is on Netflix
Loosely based on the Douglas Adams novel.
Crazy, quirky, mind boggling with lot of twist and turns.
Season long story arcs. Perfect for binge watching.

Cons:
Sometimes too much graphic violence to my likening for this kind of show. (Do not get me wrong, I like Fargo). So it is definitely nothing for young kids.
Got cancelled by BBC America. Unless Netflix picks it up and takes it further we are stuck with this two seasons.

I really got into the Man in the High Castle (it's on Amazon, currently waiting for season 3), as well as a Making a Murderer (Netflix).

This thread has given me lots of ideas for things to binge watch!

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Netflix has surprising good quality TV series nowadays. I especially enjoy the various "non-english" shows as they are quite refreshing. For example:
Subarra: Crime/gangster-thriller drama in italy, a fresh take
La Casa de Papei: A spanish heist gone wrong-drama
Dark: German stranger things meet the killing
Occupied: Norwegian drama where Norway is occupied by Russia

The German series Dark is good and thrilling if you have the time to watch it, I would also recommend it to those who want to practice their German - engaging and easy to understand dialogues, excellent actors.
