Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

"Last Chance U" on Netflix is fascinating, if you know at least a bit about American football.

Each series (of 5) follows a Junior College team made up of youngsters with severe social problems (e.g. his Dad shot his Mum when he was 5 and then committed suicide). Many missing and abusive Dads, part time jobs, sleeping in cars... So the coaches have to 1) Lick these guys into a good team and 2) Make sure that they pass their exams, so that they can move on to a full college, where the big money is. So it's a mix of social and sport documentaries.

The coach in the 5th series, John Beam, is a wonderful human being who really cares about his team. It's a real cliffhanger whether his best players will sink or go one to greater things.

It's a great insight into a less documented part of life in the USA, whether in Oakland or deepest Mississippi.
