Grrr...it's been almost an hour and mine appears to be hung on the update. Anyone else's take a really, REALLY long time to update?

Hrm, well, I continue to have issues downloading stuff via iTunes on my home cable provider (Cablecom) but elsewhere I don't. Weird. I just forced a reboot and restore...we'll see how that goes.

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

Even the brand new 4S was very slow in applying the OTA update.
But it worked, eventually.
I would just let it run over the night - or update via iTunes (if that is still possible).

I've done 3 devices. It takes about 30 mins in total, and just a few of those minutes are the data download. The rest is verifying the download, flashing the ROM, restarting (twice) etc.. It beeps when its finished

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

I have no idea what it is about cablecomm and iTunes downloads but, I guess I have to wait for the OH to bring home the ipsw files on a stick from the network at the office as I can't download a file that isn't corrupted in some way....what am I going to do without angry birds all afternoon?

Got a white Thompon WiFi router from upc cableom?
If so, you're hit with the Thomson firmware bug....

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

I'm so geeky.

I tried to do it over the air, as I've got no iTunes access at work. It failed each time whilst downloading (over wireless - I have no data plan).

Got home, upgraded iTunes to 10.6 (might or might not be necessary), and the install to IOS 5.1 went flawlessly.

Then I downloaded redsn0w_win_0.9.10b6 and jail broke it (I like my 5 columns of reduced-size icons plus other tweaks) which also went perfectly.

It's a tethered jailbreak at the moment (means you need to turn the phone on with the jailbreak app and phone connected via USB) but I'm sure they'll update it in due course. Note that I have a 3GS phone - jailbreaking 5.1 isn't possible on the 4S yet afaik.

Why did I bother with the upgrade? I just like to know I've got the latest version Plus I'm hoping some of the battery life fixes make a noticable difference.

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

OK, so I've got a stupid question....

Is iOS the same as the iPod software or something different?

Reason for asking (apart from general interest) is that I updated my iPad yesterday without issue, but I just went to upgrade my iPod Touch and it didn't download new software, saying that the iPod software 3.1.3 which is currently has is the latest version. Is it just because this is a 1st or 2nd generation Touch (I don't know what generation it is ) and so there will be no further updates beyond 3.1.3?

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

You probably have a 1st gen touch.

I've no real clue but putting "ipod touch iOS upgrade" into google gave me some hints in under 2 seconds

My iPhone 3GS battery life is at least 50% better since installing this latest OS.

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

My 4s is 8 months old and the update went smooth and fine using wifi at home. I have 25Mbps connection at home.

I haven't seen any significant change in the battery life.

Re: In case you missed it: iOS 5.1 Software Update

For those who care, 5.1.1 has been out for a while and there's now an untethered jailbreak for it.
