iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1 woes and solution

Hi Everybody,

Here is a little story with a positive outcome-

As most with iphones will know, the new iOS came out a week or so ago. Now I know that one should never try out upgrades until someone has done it and posted a review somewhere highlighting any issues, however I was bored and had an itch that needed scratching.

Everything went fine, right until the moment I made a phone call. No-one could hear me. It was the same when someone called me. Tried reinstalling, restoring, resetting... etc. etc. Nothing worked.

Anyway, this morning I paid a visit to Apple in Geneva. I saw one of the chaps working there and waited for my appointment. Someone had a look at my phone, was very understanding and then said "Your warranty ran out 206 days ago".

Oops.

I said it is Apple's fault with the OS. He said I sympathise but there is nothing I can do to help - except I could go and have a chat with my manager.

30 seconds later he came back. *Manager has told me to treat it as if it is still under warranty, so we will replace the phone".

Cue one very happy customer who will definitely be returning to Apple!

But the biq question is of course what the real problem was that was apparently caused by a software upgrade tested already by thousands of people around the world before it launhed to the general public that caused apple to simple replace your ou of warranty phone....

Some weird issues - probably settings/config being messed up for some people.

My 3GS updated (from 5.01) without problems.

Resetting software on the phone to factory default does not require new hardware, just a reset.... That is why I am bit perplexed by this...

Of course the new one solves the problem for the user, but it is odd...

Crap! I have the same problem! And my phone is less than a year old. I was wondering WTF was going on as it works fine with my earbud. <insert much swearing here>. Bitches, I'm getting my butt on down to the apple store on Monday as getting it replaced as I've had a week of misery with this phone. Damn Apple....I'm a lifetime user (apple II, Lisa and first Mac) still, they are often far too slow in admitting problems...one reason why I'm not rushing to buy new gear anymore. Shite...this would happen in the most inconvenient week possible.

My experience with apple staff has also been positive and I've never walked out of an Apple store displeased.

But now that you and the other guys mention it, I had the same problem with my phone this afternoon. I was making a call using a VoIP app and the guy on the other side couldn't hear me. I called again and sound went through fine.

It was pretty bizarre. The mic worked fine if I used Skype or the audio notetaker. Yet as soon as I phoned, the mic went dead. I tried all the different solutions given online by other users, but nothing worked.

My feeling is it is something that Apple couldn't really resolve during testing so they decided it is easier to change phones and use the problematic phones as their guinea-pigs.

Anyway, the bottom line is I got my problem fixed, so I am happy I suppose, but it really shouldn't have happened.
