Media streaming ….How do you guys and girls do it in 2012...(media streaming-that is)

SPRING 2012

technology have moved in leaps and bounces since last I streamed media from PC to TV.

I Used to plug in my laptop to the tv via HDMI cable and use VLC remote on a smartphone, worked ok.. now I am without a pc/laptop with HDMI port...

anyone out there with any suggestions how to stream media from a pc (if not, maybe now is the time for me to get that first x box or play station)

http://apcmag.com/nostalgia-rebooted...sale-again.htm(have a look at the 2011 version.)

Currently I have a cable com Philips HD recorder/media box and was wondering if there is a way to stream media directly to the media box

does anyone know if is possible to connect a hard drive to the media box in order to copy and store recorded programs for later viewing... would this solution also support playing downloaded material /files...?

let me know how you solve this issue... what is your current setup ?

Re: Media streaming ….How do you guys and girls do it in 2012...(media streaming-that

I've never tried with our mediabox. We have a Samsung smart TV which has wi fi and automatically found both our PCs. Haven't tried streaming yet, but was nice to use it to look at photos. As far as streaming goes, we only watch anything that we've downloaded to watch on the tv, never tried to watch a live stream from the PC so the tv. We use our Ps3 to connect to the tv. Xbox can do it as well, but if I remember, it was very cumbersome to connect them (funny considering we were just linking 1 Microsoft product to another).

Does your cablebox (or even your TV) have any USB ports? That might be another option to watch videos from your PC, download to a usb key first and plug it into the tv

If you're going to buy a console, I'd recommend Ps3 if you don't have another blu ray player. Xbox does not have a blu ray player. It was fairly easy to connect the PC to the Ps3.

Sorry for the short post in advance, I'm using my iPhone, I can elaborate later. But I use an apple TV to stream all my media. If you have a Mac it's relatively easy, if your on pc you can jailbreak it and stream all your media from there as well. I also have a USA VPN service through www.unblockus.com for 4.99 a month which allows me to watch Hulu and Netflix.

I believe apple just released its new appleTV which supports 1080 hd for 99chf, compared to the old one which is only 720

I'm not familiar with your Cablecom box exactly. If it has an ethernet port or wifi built in, it could be possible. Does the menu give any indication of this option? Maybe a software upgrade?

Personally, I bought my own box for 200CHF:
https://www.digitec.ch/Startseite.as...se&wert=211744

This does have a media-streamer built in. I have a NAS hard-drive on my home network and can stream directly from that. The Samsung box has a USB port and a built-in PVR, so you can easily attach any USB drive and record TV shows to that.

Oh, almost forgot to mention, you need to buy a "DigiCard" from Cablecom for 100CHF to plug into the Samsung box's CI+ slot:
http://www.upc-cablecom.ch/en/b2c/tv...e/digicard.htm

So, 200CHF for the Samsung box, 100CHF for the DigiCard, some USB drive, and you are all set for recording and streaming. Plus you can get TV cheaper from Cablecom when you don't rent their box.

Zyxel NAS310 server with 500 GB Hard disk -- available at Conrad for CHF 120. Works pretty well with music / Videos / Photos.

Whatever can play from a DLNA server from all of these things can use this which would be on your PC. Free DLNA server.

Re: Media streaming ….How do you guys and girls do it in 2012...(media streaming-that

I find that my ps3 is the best device for all of my media. Blu ray for when i want top quality, data on a memory stick for when i want to watch content copied from my computer, and occasionally wireless streamed content from my mac to ps3 via a program called medialink.

for me thats all good.

Mezzmo is in my experience the best at handling the heavy duty files. Not free though but I bought it for like 1/2 price. I've been using Serviio too which works quite well (probably next best after Mezzmo) and it's free.

Stream to LG TV / Logitech Revue Google TV / Patriot Box Office

Hardwire is indeed the recommended way to go

All my Video and music content is stored on a big NAS. This can be accessed from anywhere in the house via PC, Laptop, WDTV Live, Popcorn, PS3 and any other media device. I used to use the TV but it does not support full HD, plus seemed to have an issue with too many files.

Don't use DNLA but all the devices support this if I wanted to use this.

There are many more hardware solutions available as well with new one's coming out all the time.

Not sure if the Apple TV will allow you to stream from your network or only supports it's own content (most likely).
