Accessing external emails from hotmail

Hi
Can anyone help me with this query? I have been given a separate email address from a company I work for, but I would like to be able to access it from hotmail. Is this possible? I have tried to go on to hotmail, into options, and add an email account, but then 'we can't connect to hotmail right now. Please try again later' comes up on the screen, even though if I just try to access my inbox, I have no problems. I have been told that if I can't manage to do it, I should set up a google email address, but to be honest, I really don't want to have a hotmail and a gmail account. Can anyone help me?
Cheers

Just as a quite heavy note : Depending on the company, but generally you are not allowed to store emails at an external service, this is primarily to protect company secrets, private details etc. especially "free mail" organisations like hotmail, gmail etc will have a clause in their policies that the email stored will and can be used in all kinds of ways and it is very likely that that is conflict with your companies policies.

As such, if I where you, first ask your company if you are even allowed to do this, as on a legal basis you might be on very thin ice.

That said, to be able to access email from another email service one generally either forwards the mail from the one to the other or one sets up the second service to poll the emails from the first, but as the latter includes giving your passwords away that likely is not something that is acceptable for most companies for obvious reasons.

Re: Accessing external emails from hotmail

Check with your company, if its outlook based email if theyve authorised it you can normally access through a link like https:??webmail.companyname.com that then takes you to a login screen which you would then enter your normal work login, maybe prefixed by company or dept etc, but only your company will know and be able to give you the info needed to access from outside.
Some companies use a citrix access, but just for mail most seem to use webmail.

Thank you all. Some really useful information. It's not actually a company, but a small assocation, who are not worried about issues of privacy, as there are just some general info queries.

I also suggest like said above to use email forwarding, you know what mail / exchange server is it for the association ? If you tell we may help you having a step by step how to set up email forwarding.

Good luck

Re: Accessing external emails from hotmail

Just to update, I decided to do it through Outlook in the end, and I did it through a local company, as my husband and I had spent hours trying to do it. Wasn't too expensive..Thanks anyway, everyone was very helpful
