Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Hi,

This afternoon I stepped into an Orange Center in Geneva and subscribed to a mobile phone and data service. I was charged around CHF 150 for the phone and CHF 40 for the SIM card (as it was stated on their website, everything fine up to now). Then, I was asked to pay an additional fee of CHF 120 for "activation of the contract". At least that's what I could understand because truth to be said, the shop assistant wasn't very eager to be understood (plus I'm not a native speaker although I think my English is good but having to deal with strong French accents is an added difficulty sometimes). The second payment was charged in a separate billing operation and I don't even have a ticket for it. I'm thinking of giving customer care a call tomorrow to check if this should be considered irregular.

Did this ever happen to any of you? What do you think?

Thanks.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Send them an email, say you are distraught, upset and wasn't told abou the extra cost. Boo Hoo etc. Then sit back and watch them wipe it off or slash the cost.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Phone Orange.

You can select to talk to an English speaker. All calls to Orange are logged to your account, so that in case of dispute they have a record of when you called and the subject of the call.

I recently changed the phone on my Orange pre-paid account. I bought the phone at the Apple shop, took it to Orange who put a new improved SIM card in for free and gave me CHF20 credit for my trouble...

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Hi,

Just noticed that it's possible to register incidents through their website (once you're logged in). So I think I'm gonna give that way a try first and if I don't get a reasonable answer soon I'll go for the phone call.

Thank you for the hints. Let's see if I'm able to figure out why the heck I was charged that fee any time soon.

Greetings from Geneva.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Hi again,

Well, no updates since Monday so this afternoon I decided to give them a quick call. After 20 minutes on hold I managed to speak with a nice lady who told me that basically they're investigating it. Then, I kindly asked her if she had ever heard about such a fee. The answer was plain and clear: no. *Sigh*, this stinks.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Howdy,

Got a call from Orange this morning regarding the incident report. I was explained the reason of the payment. It's basically a deposit in order to enable roaming. I'm supposed to get my money back within six months.

It seems that one can choose between either paying the fee or having voice and data roaming disabled for the first three months (allegedly to check if you're a good lad and if you have money to pay the bills). I wasn't asked about this when I signed up but according to Orange I should have been. Maybe they just assumed that given I'm not Swiss I'd like to have it enabled from the very first day.

Anyway, mystery solved.

Thanks for your answers, hope this helps someone else.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Hi,
I have a similar kind of problem with Orange. I was asked a deposit of CHF 1000 to activate my international roaming. Its not justified as my bills are direct debited to my Swiss bank account. The reason they gave to me was that I hold a B-permit which forces such rules on my. Authorities to blame?

It is stupid to pay 1000 CHF to enjoy the service of being able to call or attend one from outside Switzerland. I have lived in other places in Europe and none of the post-paid connections had such issues.

The Swiss are risk averse, 15 years ago you needed a 500 CHF deposit just to have a cell phone for use in CH only!

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

I personally unsubscribed from Orange after having had way too many problems with them. I had a monthly internet subscription and I still got bills where they tried to charge me between 100 and 200 francs per month for the use of internet, even when I was far from using my 300 MB per month that was included in my contract. When confronting them, I was told that I wouldn't receive those bills again - whereafter they kept coming. I hope you have better luck talking to them than I did!

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

My Orange bills were going through the roof and finally I had had enough. Called them up, they walked me through some things to do with my phone, gave me a credit on my bill, and since then, my bills have been stabilized at 88CHF/mo.

They're really quite good if you call them up and talk to them, and they're one of the few businesses that readily speak fluent English. But if you let them charge you, they'll also readily take your money.

Re: Orange.ch -- unexpected charge

Just for the record, the deposit has been already released. Basically, they added it as positive credit in my balance, so now subsequent bills with be paid with that money.

Have a nice Sunday.
