iPhone 3GS Unlocking

Hi

I have an iPhone 3GS that I'd like to have unlocked. Are there any independent phone shops in Zurich that do this while-u-wait?

Thanks

When I arrived here over a year ago I wanted to unlock my UK phone to use here. In the lake Geneva area (or lac leman) all of the shops I went to told me that it is illegal to unlock mobile phones in Switzerland, therefore they could not do it, nor recommend anywhere that I could go.

Not sure if it is true, but I went to 6 different shops, all with the same result.

Re: iPhone 3GS Unlocking

Hallo,
It is easier to google how to unlock it, that`s what I have done... For 3GS there is no problem to unlock it and it is simple, just need to download one or two programs (the best one is redsn0w), jailbreak it (install cydia) and than in cydia instal ultrasn0w ... That would be all... If need some more help I am here...

You can DIY with Cydia.

But if you have updated your software recently then it's prob not possible to unlock it.

As mentioned in the above post, I have updated the software automatically via Itunes. Do you think I can still jailbreak and unlock it?

If you have recently updated the software automatically via Itunes, then its very difficult to jailbreak, but possible.

Re: iPhone 3GS Unlocking

I think that the only solution is to upgrade your firmware to 06.15.00 what is not so good idea, because you never again can get back on your old one, and you loose your gps availability... I`v done so, but not recommended ...

Do not do this!

06.15.00 is an iPad 1 modem, it will forever destroy any reliability the phone may have once enjoyed. In addition to the GPS issues (which are somewhat fixable), there are problems with data connection switches from wifi to 3g and tower to tower.

There is also no way to restore it and likely never will be.

Is there a reason why the carrier won't unlock it? Even AT&T has started unlocking iPhones!

Re: iPhone 3GS Unlocking

indeed - if you have fulfilled your contract period then ask the carrier to unlock it. Sync to iTunes twice afterwards and you'll have a phone with no simlock.
