New phone - looking for one with a specific app

My iphone 3G is beginning to creak at the seams (literally), so it time for an overdue upgrade.

Normally, I'd just go with apple, but this time I have a very specific function I'd like the phone to handle.

I'd like to have an app (native or 3rd party) which allows me to view OS-grade, 1:25k maps of CH, complete with a GPS overlay of my current position.

I will consider Apple or Android; however with a new iphone it's a no-hassle upgrade, while with Android I'd gain access to the galaxy note, whose screen would be ideally suited to my map viewing requirements.

Any ideas? Does such and app (and the map data) exist?

Ok, this will be heretically non tech talk, but my GPS, current location, Maps etc. aps on HTC Sensation are good (for my lowly needs, that is).

Many of the GIS systems available are vector or tile based, so you can view them at any scale nicely. I personally use Osmand+ on my Galaxy SII, which I like over Maps for several reasons.

1) Will lock the screen on. Maps will allow the screen to lock and go dark, so unless you have a co-pilot in the car you can't use it as an on board GPS app.
2) Offline. I have Switzerland and Austria downloaded and can find my way around these countries without accessing and using up my data allocation.
3) Routing. Actually, this one is a bit meh, but it will do routing for you, though some of the routes I've found have been a little off. OTOH, in one case it did do a better job than Google.

Osmand (the + version just means you get access to automatic updates) is free, has pretty much the whole world mapped, and will store maps on your phone so you don't have to constantly stream data. It's not perfect, and it has force closed on me in the past, and I might try one of the other options on Google Play, but for the moment it suffices.

Hope this helps!

Swisstopo provides an app for most smart phones.

Bingo, this looks spot on. So that leaves the age-old debate...IOS or Android?

I'd check out if it works well on an iPhone. The Google Play reviews are pretty scathing, but that could be a porting issue.

Why - Android of course!

Can recommend the HTC One X. If you use GPS a lot, you might want a display that isn't stamp-sized. The One X really delivers in this department.

This was my rationale for the note.

My main concern with Android is the "data services" I rely on with IOS and OSX - in particular data syncing via iCloud, itunes syncing, media streaming from itunes (inc DRM'ed media).

Ive seen it possible to address most of these issues in Android, but I'm struggling on media streaming to Android (video, mainly) - looks like I need to run another "unDRM" session against my library before I can make it 100% available to Android.

It's a bit "notchy"; seems to have long pregnant pauses when scrolling around. You need to hold the finger down for 3-4 seconds before attempting to scroll around. Itunes reviews are less than spectacular too.
