How to return a locked, airplane mode I-Phone

I found an iPhone that I want to return to its owner.

The phone had a security code and it was in Airplane mode. In hopes of accessing the SIM to call anyone listed in the phone book, we reset the phone to the remove the phone's security code. It is now returned to factory settings. Unfortunately, when we put the SIM back in, it is also protected with a pass code.

So, the only remaining clue we have to track down the owner is the SIM, which has a code on it. But, the SIM card itself does not say who the provider is. The SIM card code does end in EUR.

Any suggestions on how we can locate the owner?

I tried the website "I found your iphone.com" but it is asking for an 11 digit serial number, and the number on the back of the phone is 10 digits. The phone's original language was German. The SIM is asking for the security code in French.

Re: How to return a locked, airplane mode I-Phone

Can you phone the service provider and give them the serial code on the Sim or phone?

Or use the IMEI number that is under the battery. Maybe that is the 11 digit number you need?

One of those numbers should get the provider to find the owner and they can then pass your info on to the owner. They won't give you the owers info but may pass urs on.

Was it found at the airport? If so it may have been reported lost there.

They may not have changed the password. Have you tried 1234, 000 etc?

Good luck

If you find an item, rather than trying to locate the owner, hand the item in to the lost and found office or closest police station to where you found the phone. The owner may have filled in a police report or will be going back to where they think they have left the phone.

11 digits is too short for an IMEI number, if i recall correctly they are 15 digits. If you need to find it on the iphone you have to enter the Settings > General > About menu where is listed along with the serial number etc.

Hand it in to the locl police station lost property department

that is the correct way, and where the owner will look for it.

Alternatively, hand it in to the mobile operator. They can read the IMEI, look up the owner, and return it.

When you do a factory reset do you loose the apps that the person has downloaded?

If not, maybe have a look and see if on opening them you find an email address and/or name (to sign in to the app).

That's a good one, Some one needs to tell the Zurich Airport and the SBB! Always wondered why the lost and found at the Airport and SBB always sell the one's left on trains, planes, in handbags and suitcases on Ricardo from the fund buro in Zurich.. I had also thought they could find the owners of the Phones but instead they sell them. Not to mention all the other stuff they sell.

Return it to an Apple Store, in person or send it to their online store (call first so they give you an RMA number). They'll sort it out for you.

Indeed, they should be able to locate the owner, unless it is a second hand phone still registered to the first owner.

You can find all the necessary model numbers, IMEI numbers, Serial numbers etc. under Settings > General > ABOUT. Or you can connect it to a computer running iTunes. It will pop up and you can see the various numbers in the screen center.

The easiest way is usually to give it to the "Fundbuero" (Lost&Found) which is operated by the City...

Re: How to return a locked, airplane mode I-Phone

Hello, found the name of the business that sells everything on Ricardo, their called ''fundsachenverkauf'' from Zurich, check them out, they sell things from all the unclaimed or lost suitcases, bags, from the SBB, and Airport on Ricardo.. Funny they can't return the iPhones to the rightful owners? But look at all the jewelry, watches, cameras, clothes, music instruments, iPhones and so on they sell. You would think people would have their name on their suitcase or bag and the phones could be traced to original owners. Makes me wonder why turn it in for them to sell? Of course we all want to do right and turn it in, but they seem to make no effort to find the original owners.

Re: How to return a locked, airplane mode I-Phone

FOLLOW UP:

OK, after finding a locked, airplane mode I-phone, trying to unlock it, trying to find the owner through any means possible, we turned it in to the Apple Store in Zurich (the next time we were in town).

We received a call from them today stating that they have not been able to locate the owner, it has been over 30 days, we could come get the phone.

Lesson to everyone! Somehow, put your contact information on your phone! I use a return mailing sticker on my phone, computer, even my glassess! Or, don't put it in airplane mode, and lock the phone, and lock the sim. The triple layer of protection made it impossible for us to call, text, or even receive the "dude, where's my phone" text message on that phone.

If nothing else, put a business card in the phone case.

Re: How to return a locked, airplane mode I-Phone

So, did you hand it into the police, so they can find the rightful owner? or did you say sod it, pick it up from apple and keep it??

the more I think about it the more I really don't understand why anyone said take it to apple, and why the op would actually do that??

when you find (or lose) something you don't go back to the manufacturer and ask them if they have it / want it, people really are taking the cult of apple way too far
